How To Instantly Ruin Your Credibility

15

Want to how to instantly ruin your credibility in regards to mobile technology? Publish an article comparing and rating the Palm WebOS, iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile… and then… declare Windows Mobile the overwhelming winner.

That’s exactly what MobilitySite.com did when they took Gizmodo’s Pre/Android/iPhone article and added BlackBerry and WinMo to the mix. The comparison looks at 16 different categories, divvying out 1 point for each and the final scoreboard was:

  • Windows Mobile: 7.333 pts
  • Palm Pre: 7.333 pts
  • iPhone: 3 pts
  • BlackBerry: 2 pts
  • Android: 0.333 pts

I’m not going to be a crybaby and say that Android should definitely be #1… but dead last with less than half of a point while WINDOWS MOBILE IS TIED FOR FIRST WITH A PHONE THAT HASN’T YET BEEN RELEASED.

I hereby dub thee MobilitySite.com the laughing stock of the blogging world and request that the interweb gods either strip them legally of domain name ownership or forward their domain to a Rick Roll. I mean really, this is just inexcusable.

I understand that this isn’t news and I know that not everyone loves Android and believes in the pure potential as I do… but this article is just filled with epic fail at a level so high on the totem pole of failage that I had to include it.

I’m still in shock. I mean… really?

  1. Just slightly less shocking than Indiana Jones having a son he never knew about and that together they discover an Alien landing site. I walked out of that movie at the end with the same feeling of Aliens? Really? Aliens?

I think the same feeling applies here. I second your opinion.

  2. I must say, i liked one of the comments about how if you read it as satire it makes perfect sense =) that makes it a little easier to stomach. Honestly though, it’s an awful review. Totally baseless and clear that he probably hasn’t actually used any of the platforms much, probably not even the WM or Pre he loves so much. Good for a laugh, but i’d love to hope no one who reads it would take it at face value.

BWAHAHAHAHA Don’t you wish you had 1% of that power. It’s an OPINION piece by ONE person at the site. Get over yourself.

But whatever you do, don’t bother actually trying to illustrate where things are wrong in the piece. Just “dub” away. That’s a REALLY GOOD way to get credibility.

” it’s an awful review. Totally baseless and clear that he probably hasn’t actually used any of the platforms much, probably not even the WM or Pre he loves so much. ”
It’s not a “review”; it’s a comparison. A review should be more thorough, IMHO.

As for using the devices, the author writes WinMo software and has used an iPhone for some period of time. Making baseless statements like that after calling his comparison “baseless” seems hypocritical. All your bases are belong to me!

I don’t find your criticism surprising considering your websites about pages says, “The site is run by me, Steve Mueller. I’m just a fan of the Windows Mobile plaform.”

I would have pointed out what was wrong in the original piece, but:

1 – I don’t have that much time in the day
2 – Didn’t want to waste that much time on the article
3 – Think its pretty obvious to most

Someone sent me a link to the piece and I found it funny enough to share. You’re entitled to your opinion though, so go ahead and flame me all you want. I’m probably more of an jerk than I need to be at times but… oh well. It was all in good fun. I admit when I’m wrong, too. I just don’t think I’m wrong about this…

  5. not only are they completely unaware of the technology around them (ie: “THE WORLD”) that is an awful scoring system considering that the g1 has as stake in more areas than the other phones, and it also has features that arent mentioned here that other phones havent implemented and probably never will such as an open source os, and apps being able to interact with each other.

  6. Wow. Thanks for giving me that link. I just wasted my life posting this on the comments there:

Seriously? Have you ever used the G1? Ever heard of Android? It should get a point in many of those categories. This article is a JOKE if you think Windows Mobile wins. This SITE is a joke if you think Windows Mobile wins. Have you ever used Windows Mobile? It was the most sluggish, ugly, most complicated user interface ever. I give it -10 for that.

Seriously though. Here we go :

Multitouch? The Android touchscreen is great even if it isn’t multitouch…kicks resistive Windows Mobile’s @$$.

Screen gestures? Ok, Android doesn’t win.

Design? Ok, the G1 may not be the prettiest. But the trackball goes a LONG way when trying to use the phone with gloves on, something that’s impossible to do with an iPhone.

Single Hand Navigation? I believe you said navigation, not typing. So I “guess” the G1 is back in. Especially since it’s getting an on-screen keyboard in about a week. Single handed navigation on the phone is amazing.

Multitasking? I love how no one gives the G1 credit. HOLD THE HOME KEY AND IT DISPLAYS THE LAST 6 APPLICATIONS THAT YOU’VE OPENED, AND IT HAS KEPT THEM RUNNING. This keeps the phone from slowing down, but also leaves 6 apps open for “multitasking”

User Interface? How do you not give Android a point? The notification bar is the best design feature in the history of smartphones. Also, it is very fluid and usable. Again, HAVE YOU USED THIS PHONE EVER?

Development platform? OPEN SOURCE. Enough said. Java is the one of the most known and most widely used programming language out there.

    Office Tools? They’re coming.

Web Integration? Well, obviously Android has none, because…you know…it was made by the biggest online corp around…GMAIL, PUSH NOTIFICATIONS, CONTACTS SYNC WITH GMAIL, CALENDAR SYNC, IM. Seriously, do your research.

App Store? Android has a great Marketplace. I guess you just didn’t give it a point because it’s not called App Store or Developer Community.

The Network? Same story as a lot of other features. More phones will be released on more networks very soon. So I guess I could justify this not getting a point (yet).

Physical Keyboard? THE G1 HAS ONE. AND ITS GOOD. You are so biased.

Camera? I agree, not the best.

Battery? Bad. Wow you got a section correct!

Copy & Paste? Oh crap. You decided to give Android a point. OH WAIT. You can’t do that. On this section, you have to SPLIT the point, which you didn’t do on any other section, because you were forced to give Android a point. Poor you.

Browser? Gizmodo and Engadget have only repeatedly rated it second only to the iPhone’s browser…so I guess we go back to you never using the phone again…it’s fantastic. Nice try though.

Please, get out more. Or stay in and read up on Android so you can actually write credible comparison articles.

    FAILURE.

  7. that jus sux! mobilitysite lost everything..

  8. @Rob

“I don’t find your criticism surprising considering your websites about pages says, ‘The site is run by me, Steve Mueller. I’m just a fan of the Windows Mobile plaform.'”

Why does my criticism of your comment have anything to do with what platform I use? I’m pretty agnostic about such things (PC vs. Mac, WinMo vs. Palm vs. BlackBerry vs. iPhone vs. Android, etc.); people should use what works best for them. I’d likely have found your comments ridiculous if I used an iPhone, too.

What I’m *not* so easy going about is trashing something without giving facts to back it up. At least the author of the piece gave *some* reasons for not giving Android points. Whether the reasons were valid or detailed enough is another matter, of course.

I also found your attitude about the site way over the top. Mobility Site (and its predecessors) has been helping people long before this site (and maybe Android itself) was even conceived. Yes, I know you were likely trying to be humorous, but encouraging censorship is almost never funny. Would you advocate Fox News or Air America losing their broadcast license if they had some outrageously stupid piece?

“I would have pointed out what was wrong in the original piece, but:

I’ll discount points #1 and #2; you had enough time to write a post here about it and trash MobilitySite. You could have devoted similar space to rebutting the piece.

Point #3 isn’t as obvious as you might think. It may be obvious to people *here*, but not to people who aren’t as familiar with Android. Not having used Android, I would be curious to see the rebuttal. I was surprised that Android received such a low score and wondered if it was just the author’s preference or whether he was missing significant facts. At least Chris tried to point out where the article was wrong.

You don’t get it, do you?

First, it’s not “they”; only one person wrote that article (although he did use some of Gizmodo). Do you often condemn multiple people for the actions of one?

    Second, what does “”

    Steve

  9. Damn, I must have clicked submit early….

You don’t get it, do you?

First, it’s not “they”; only one person wrote that article (although he did use Gizmodo’s article as a basis). Do you often condemn multiple people for the actions of one?

Second, what does “the g1 has as stake in more areas than the other phones” mean? What “stake” are you talking about?

Third, whether Android has other features may not be relevant. The author was likely choosing the features that were important *to him* (with the possible exception of Web integration). Also, he was using almost the same items as the Gizmodo article. Did you trash that, too? (I’m not going to wade through 130+ comments to find out.)

Fourth, saying other phone platforms “probably never will” implement some features sounds like rhetoric. What basis do you have to claim that?

Fifth, open source isn’t really a feature; it’s a development methodology and/or a mindset. Regardless, using open source as a “feature” that nobody will implement is flat out wrong — Symbian is going open source.

Also, what do you mean about “apps being able to interact with each other”? As far as I know, Windows Mobile provides many mechanisms to allow programs to interact.

    Steve

  10. Steve,

“I’m pretty agnostic about such things”

… this is meant to be a joke, right? Can you spell fanboi? How about bias? how about FAIL?

  11. Gotta say, he gave failing grade on multitasking to Android (Linux kernel) and iPhone (Mach kernel) over WinMo (WinCE) ?

When stating facts, make sure they are correct.

  12. The reviewer is just another fan boy sucking up to M$ just like PC Mag

  13. I just love how this guy had the pleasure of using any phone he liked as typical of the platform he was evaluating. On overall design he picks whatever winmo phone best presents the experience he wants and then fails to recognize that the g1 is only one of many devices that runs android (eg nokia n810, HTC touch HD, ACER eepc). If you wanna critisize a platform find but don’t do it based on the faulty assumption that what you see is all that is available for one platform but you can choose the best of what you like from others. Additionally how did android not stomp the competion on the keyboard? It is the only phone I know of that has a “|” key on the keyboard. How did it not win on market and web integration and dev community as well. This is just crazy.

  14. @Luka:

I’ve used Windows Mobile for years, so I’m very familiar with it. It does what I need, so I don’t see any need for ME to switch at this point.

That doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate the value other platforms provide or that I would criticize people for choosing something other than what I use. I also expect other people to respect my choices without insults (something apparently beyond you).

So, no, my post wasn’t a joke. As for fanbois, I hope you see the irony of that comment at a site called “Phandroid”.

    @solid:

Yes, cherry picking devices seems sketchy, but it also shows the flexibility of Windows Mobile.

Android probably has that same flexibility, but citing hacked devices really doesn’t make your case. As far as I know, there’s only one production Android device available today (unless you count the developer’s G1). I’m sure there will be others, of course (Motorola has said they’ll be making some).

People were putting Linux on the old Compaq iPAQs back in 2001/2002, but that didn’t make the iPAQ a Linux device just like the devices you cited aren’t really Android devices. (Call them Franken-Phones…. :D)

    Steve

  15. i read that too, idiot – coming from someone who had an iphone, then an omnia (piece of utter shit might i add) and now a HTC Magic.

that blogger should have his fingers chopped off
