If you didn’t already know, the Acer Liquid A1 is already available in the good old UK and it really is a nice looking phone. Resting on a 1GHz snapdragon processor how can you complain? Easily, if you don’t live in the UK I suppose. But Americans will be relieved to know that the device just passed the FCC sporting AT&T 3G capable bands (850 / 1900 MHz).
This is just the beginning of Acer’s push… we told you yesterday the company aims to release 5-6 Acer phones in the first half of 2009. Second half of 2009? I wouldn’t be surprised if they match and/or exceed that number.
Since the A1 just launched in the UK there have been some unboxings done and I thought they might pique your interest. So here you have it, an Acer Liquid A1 unboxing courtesy of TechnoloShree:
Also interesting is that pages in the A1 Manual actually tell you how to use your phone to tether the device to your cmoputer:
AT&T will likely be offering an Android Phone from another computer manufacturer in early 2010 – DELL. This should be interesting.
[Thanks Carl!]
I don’t want AT&T to get an Android Phone because their network won’t be able to support it well. Hence, iPhone.
@Rob – […] we told you yesterday the company aims to release 5-6 Acer phones in the first half of 2009. Second half of 2009? […]
Isn’t it supposed to be 2010?? As we are leaving 2009 behind us?
@swehes
Acer has made a huge commitment to Android and has a big team working on launching new devices. They plan on launching 5-6 new Android phones at all price points in the first half of 2010. Here is a link from Computer World:
“Acer plans up to 6 new Android handsets for first half 2010: Acer plans to launch as many as six new smartphones with Google’s Android mobile operating system in the first half of next year, a company executive said. The world’s second largest PC vendor this week started rolling out its first Android handset, the Liquid smartphone. The device went on sale via Hong Kong operator CSL on Wednesday and at Far EasTone Telecommunications of Taiwan today. “We’re still evaluating the second half,” said Roger Yuen, vice president of Acer’s smart handheld business in Asia. Acer will ship five or six Android-based handsets in the first half of 2010, he said. Acer plans to unveil
Android mobile phones for three price levels, top-end, mid and low-end, as well as models aimed at business users and consumers, he said. The executive declined to say when Acer’s second Android mobile phone will be available. Liquid, a 3.5-inch touchscreen smartphone
with a Qualcomm 8250 Snapdragon chipset inside, was announced earlier this year. The device uses version 1.6 of Android, comes with a built-in GPS receiver for location services and a 5-megapixel camera. The smartphone will be offered by mobile operators in Europe by the first quarter of 2010 and will continue to roll out around the world, Yuen said. Currently, it is only available through operators in Asia. “We have several operators we are talking to both in Asia and in Europe,” he said. “We will be announcing [those deals] shortly, within the next month,” he added. “We have a very large R&D team so they work on Android projects,” said Yuen.” (Computer World)
Hope that helps.
Comments?
At least in europe the Liquid is clocked to 768 MHz although the snapdragon platform is capable of 1GHz.
I’d love it if at some point people would use some real test results to support the claim “at&t’s network won’t support it well” as opposed to just sticking to the common assumption. AT&T’s network mostly crashed when the iphones were released because of the OTA activation required and most of that was restransmits by the apple servers. The network holds up just fine and passes plenty of traffic from all sorts of devices except in large venues (stadiums, music fests, etc) where EVERY carrier craters. In my personal experience and professional opinion it will perform just fine, just like every other carrier. The only choice anyone has to make is who has better 3G coverage in their own area, which for most of Texas (for me) means AT&T. Tmo here sucks outside of downtown areas, verizon is passable and sprint is passable, but AT&T is the only carrier here that has network everywhere I personally plan to go.
At least just do your own research, or trust research that was fully done instead of listening to commercials which are all full of BS, no matter who it is.
I am always left wondering why people freak out when a CPU is underclocked…. Has nobody figured out they can always unleash the CPU (albeit with a crappier battery life)?
AT&T… that spells deal breaker for me. I’ll take any carrier over the dredded “A” word.
I wonder what the price with and without contract will be. I’m really interested in this phone.
Cant believe I’m saying this, but I’m actually more interested on this Acer phone than the Dell android phone, love how it looks. If it does ever come out for AT&T I’d so gladly get one of these.
