By The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has received a lot of heat for its lack of multi-touch support. It is widely believe that it just plain isn’t possible using the X10’s combination of software and hardware. Yesterday we learned that updates planned for the X10 may provide a workaround that will enable multi-touch-like features without actually being multi-touch, but the below video seems to indicate that somehow this is already possible.
I almost want to say he is just pretending to use multi-touch as Google Maps looks like it zooms in for him with a single finger swipe as well. Any X10 users who can shed some light on this video? [UPDATE]: In response to the speculation as to whether or not the X10 will ever receive multi-touch, Eric de Kort of Sony Ericsson gave this succinct statement:
“Multi-touch will not be a feature in future updates for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 because the device does not support multi-touch due to her software and hardware configuration. The operation and user experience of the phone will be further improved and Sony Ericsson will come with her own intuitive way of, for example, zooming in and out.”
I guess that settles that once and for all.

Just tried it on my coworkers x10 from Rogers. I was able to multi-touch zoom, but not zoom out…odd…
Completely off topic… am I the only one creeped out by that dudes thumb? Like a Grey, Alien demoing the Sony x10.
I don’t think he is doing multi-touch. I just tried that on my X10 and got the same effect. Tap with one finger and swipe with the other. You can zoom with only one finger.
I’d say it’s a fake. You can double-tap very subtly on the screen and Google Maps will zoom in smoothly. I tried on my X10 and could make it look like I was pinch-zooming.
I’d be more inclined to say it was MT if he was zooming out, as I haven’t found a quick way to do that through a pinch-like gesture.
SE has stated a number of times the X10 hardware is MT incapable. I don’t see why they’d say that if it weren’t true, as it hurt sales and perception of the X10.

Yes, IT WORKS LIKE ON THE VIDEO. Don’t ask me how but I just tried and it works exactly like that.
PS: not having the device = I meant in a general way, I whether you have an X10 or not, keep in mind.
One thing is sure, it might be a GMaps thing but it works but only for zooming in, not for zooming out.

i am an x10 user and multi touch does not work . on google maps if you double tap it alows you to zoom in and i believe trying multi touch pinch just confusez the phone and acts as a double tap. the word goes that in september there shall b an update for it wich i am looking forward to . im sure the problem shall be fixed in the future.but dont let the “lack” of multi touch put you off because it is still a great phone. even tho the battery life is bolux
I got one X10 myself and tried this “pinch zoom”.
It works, but as others say, it isn’t the pinch gesture itself that “magically works”. It’s just the phone getting confused and interprets the touch as a double/triple -tap.
So: Trying the pinch results in the phone thinking you’re double-tapping. Double-tap does “zoom in” on many apps.
Again: The phone does NOT have nor will have multitouch.
I tried the pinch and other multitouch -functions on the screen in applications that uses double-tap for various functions, and everytime I had more than one finger on the screen, the phone registered that as a double-tap, sometimes even triple-tap.
Hi he is not tryin to mislead anyone although i can see how you would think it. He is just sliding the map with hos finger with anit of lag due to the maps having to be downloaded
Hi.. I was first thrilled to notice the subject that X10 will support multitouch. and I tried just like the video shows. I will try to explain what I found out. We all know that double click performs zoom in in google maps. So the action the man is doing is not actually a pinch to zoom. But in the process with his 2 fingers, he is able to do a double touch, even I was able to zoom in with the similar action. With the thumb on the screen first, if you slide the screen with your index finger right after touching the screen with the thumb, this can be performed again and again. I really wish if X10 supported multi touch. and Now i hear, BB torch also has multi touch.. SE.. are you listening….
