It’s Official: AT&T’s Getting The Dell Streak 5, Not Before Telefonica O2 This Month

20

I wanted to try and find a play on those old “Dude, you’re getting a Dell!” ads with the title of this post, but it didn’t quite work out. Instead, let’s get down to business: AT&T will officially be getting the Dell Streak 5. The news comes to us as Michael Dell – founder and CEO – confirmed the handset’s initial carriers by way of a fast mouth at the Citrix Synergy conference in good ol’ San Francisco.

“This will be available starting next month, first with our partner 02 Telefonica in Europe, then later this summer with our pretty good partner here in the United States, AT&T,”

Dell-Mini-5-No-Watermark

Telefonica O2 will be seeing the sought-after device sometime this June, with AT&T getting its version later on in the summer. Pretty good news for those looking for a phone/MID hybrid device. The 5-inch screen that the Streak 5 sports isn’t the most ideal for a phone, but paired with a bluetooth headset I’m sure this one will get many people excited.

Granted AT&T doesn’t lock this device down, will you be in line to get one when it lands for the carrier?

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. If it comes to Tmo and it is going to be updated to FroYo and is HSPA+ capable then I’m all over it. As stated its perfect as a phone/MID

  2. Ummm… No. Too small to be a tablet. Too big to be a phone/PDA. Skip the 5-7 inches. That’s a waste of hardware. 4.3 inches really should be the max screen size for a phone (and even then, that’s a little big) and 9 inches should be the smallest for a tablet. 5 inches doesn’t cut it.

  3. It looks good.

    Its like a mini tablet.

  4. @Ratnok, what you describe, then is a MID (mobile internet device).

  5. 5″ is still pocketable (unless you wear fashion jeans) and fits nicely in a belt case. It also is about as big as you can go and still fit. Therefore it is perfect as a combo device (smartphone/mid). Given that I spend way more time browsing, reading ebooks, using it for Nav, and quick lookups than I do talking to people it looks just about perfect to me.

The phone size is easily “solved” by using a headset.

Try fitting a 7″ tablet, or worse still an iPad into your pocket. If I need a gadget bag to carry it, then I an going to take my subnote with a high res 12″ screen, keyboard, and fast CPU and just tether.

  6. I just got stab in the heart ( LOL ) I really want. This but I was hopping it will be paired up with T-Mobile. What shame…..!!!
Anyone know if there’s a chance it might one to T-Mobile as well…? ( whishfull thinking )

  7. Sigh… I really wanted one of these, but now I’ll have to keep looking. I’ve been suffering with the iPhone and ATT for several years now, and I just won’t sign up for two more years with ATT.

I don’t understand why Dell would partner with a proven loser. Doesn’t Dell understand that the essential thrust of the Android strategy is choice – different form factors, different features… DIFFERENT TELECOM SERVICE PROVIDERS?

    Sigh.

  8. very sweet, still won’t get me to go to AT&T H377… 5″ and Android is a definite bonus! was hoping for Sprint myself, they seem to get niche phones like that first (pre/pixi/evo) I guess android has made enough of a dent in the market to be considered profitable for AT&T now…

  9. Personally, I think a 5″-7″ tablet is the sweet spot for corporate use of tablets for mobile employees. Everyone seems to think like Apple and that tablets are only for consumers in a home environment. I believe the biggest use of tablets will be service workers using company tablet devices to perform real-time remote work accessing company databases. In that environment having a device you can hold in one hand while touching the screen is a requirement. If you look at the iPad commercials or ads, all the users position the tablet on their legs or table… you can’t easily hold it in one hand for long and peck at the screen. Dell may be positioning the Streaks as enterprise level tools… not as smart phones for consumers… if Dell was smart, they should.

I agree. Imagine the mobile workers using this instead of the laptop mounted to the dashes of today. Off the top, I see police officers/investigators using these devices instead of thos outdated flip-notes.

  11. This phone should be coming to TMO according to the FCC filings. The Att filing is for the M01M and TMO is M02M

  12. It seems really a nice device but screen max size should okay less than 4.5 inch for mobile phones

  13. @Izzkareem
dude i hope ur right man…!!
I love my N1 but i need 1.3 inches more

  14. Hmmm!!! Very interesting. If the specs are to be believed this should fit into a neat niche wherby one can have a tablet and a smartphone with Android.
Sounds too good to be true. Waiting with bated breath and keeping my fingers crossed.

  15. thats what she said!!!

  16. Yo! izzy
maybe TMO too but Michael Dell stated @ Citrix Synergy Conf.coming 2 AT&T this summer.
it’s nice and guy size.it knocked the Xperia X10 off my list.
    good luck!

  17. Nope…If it had a slider qwerty keyboard in it, I’d probably really consider it, but it doesn’t. I will not buy any phone without a qwerty.

  18. I’m excited about this device because of it’s size and potential, I just hope AT&T doesn’t screw up the software too much. I recall seeing a partnership with amazon for content, which is cool and reasonable in my opinion. Hopefully this device will be able to access the app store and we’ll be good to go. Coupled with my bluetooth headphones (slightly less creepy than an earpiece imho) this device is perfect for a 25 year old dude who doesnt wear tight pants. I see a lot of people saying that it’s too big, but WHY, why is it too big? Its only an inch or two longer than an iphone. I know I’m asking too much, but it would be nice if people could say “this phone is too big because…” I just dont see it. Is it like those burger king commercials with the guy with the tiny hands who doesnt want a whopper because it makes his hands look smaller?

  19. I have one, it’s a little big but honestly I wouldn’t make it any smaller. I’m a nurse and it works super well for what I do.
