By Great news for you scholars out there! Google’s opening the floodgates a bit more for new users to get in on the beta for Google Voice. The only catch is that you need to be a student, and Google will verify this by requiring you use an email address that ends in “.edu”. Obviously, if you’re an educator, you can get through the loophole of having to be a student as most educators tend to have similar email addresses for their place of work.
No word on if your invite will allow you to invite others, but this could be your chance to get some of your friends into the beta that couldn’t get in a while back. This is a great opportunity for students who’ve been looking to take advantage of Google’s (admittedly awesome) visual and transcribed voicemail and SMS features. Paired with an Android phone, you’ll have a blissful Google Voice experience that could prove to make campus life just a bit easier for you (namely, texting in class without tipping your instructor off just became a hell of a lot easier).
Head on over to google.com/voice/students and expect an invite no later than 24 hours after submitting your school email address.
I got my Google Voice account three months ago(no invite ability yet)and it is awesome for my Moto Droid, but my wife is getting her Incredible soon so I need an invite for her!
Are Google voice invites even hard to come by anymore? I find it hard to believe that there’s a group of people who want in to the beta that can’t get access.
Is this for other countries than USA? My uni has .ac.uk emails.

@Mark Dell Yes there is…I have been waiting since November 09 when I bought my Droid Eris…still haven’t got one until today. Good thing I am a grad student.
THIS IS AWESOME!!! ive been waiting for them to open it up. and i just happen to be in college, sweeeet. i signed up like 2 months ago but no invite. and i just signed up for this one so i hope it comes in quick, they say in 24 hours.
I dont have a smartphone but it will still be cool to have for the voicemail transcribing, and number thing. anyone else know what i can do with it

I have been wanting a GoogleVoice invite for quite a while now. I signed up last summer and heard nothing. I signed up again in November, anticipating an Android phone… still nothing. I might have to pull out my old college email and see if that’ll get me in.
DAMN IT! I just purchased one on eBay last night.

For those asking, yes, it is only for students with US .edu accounts, but the service is only available in the US right now anyway, so even if you tried to get a regular invite it wouldn’t work. During the Beta phase they are likely sticking to the US, then roll it out to the rest of the world when it is more mature. With something as complicated as the telephone network, especially with how they are manipulating it, you don’t want to have to add the potential for that much more headache until you have the baseline setup good and solid.
Why has Google not extended google voice outside the US.
Its frustrating.Google has millions of gmail account holders in other countries who want to use this,but can’t.Pls pls pls….spread the love

I got my gvoice account about 6 months ago, and i’ve had these invites for a while now.
The reason is because DIDs are cheap in the US. I can imagine they don’t want to get involved in handling phone numbers for the rest of the world at this point. Rates are also different in the US. Here both caller and receiver pays for the phone call while in Europe only the caller pays. Google probably have some sweet deals with companies like Level3 that as Google probably push through a high traffic through Level3’s pipes. There are alot of things to think about before they offers a free service such as voice calling for free in other countries. I can see this to happen nicely once they get Gizmodo5 integrated with Google Voice. It will be great.

Are you kidding me? This is an android blog, and you people still don’t realize a google voice invite is not needed if you log in/sign up using the android application. I’ve activated like 5 different email addresses using my nexus one and my wife’s droid. It’s not rocket science.

@jason… not true. have tried exactly what you said with a droid, G1 and moment and when trying to activate the app, it says “your google account is not yet enabled for google voice.”
jason- how were you able to set it up using that application because I just tried to sign up on my incredible and it didnt work. It said validating phone number and did not work? Just wondering if I was doing something wrong.
Jason, what you’re talking about isn’t google voice. When you activate/open/get a google voice account, you get an actual phone number. A real one, with an area code, all 10 digits. Back when they started the beta, I got my invite within a couple days. Now it seems it takes months after submitting your e-mail to the waiting list. Just because you have a gmail account, does not mean you have a GV invite reserved for you.
What does he mean “namely, texting in class without tipping your instructor off just became a hell of a lot easier?” I have Google Voice but I don’t know what he means by this.
@JS, I think he means because w/google voice you can send and receive texts through the computer… as opposed to typing into your phone.
I just activated my account today, but no option to invite anyone. I will say the international calling rates are awesome though. Very cheap compared to Comcast’s rates. The transcribing is neat to. It’s pretty accurate as long as it’s in English. I tested with two voice-mails in Spanish. One didn’t even get transcribed, and the other got translated in to English so badly i couldn’t stop laughing. Still an awesome thing to have. Especially paired with the Voice app in the market.
ok so i just got the google voice invite and set up on my phone. Im not too sure i like it so far(will give it more time for sure) but is there a way you can take it off your phone and use your regular voice mail with your carrier?
