By Two weeks ago, we saw Android 2.1 becoming the second-most used platform version across all of the Android versions released up until this point. Google gave us another update, yesterday, and it shows that Android 2.1 has taken a significant leap to trump Android 1.5 (which sat at 37.2% just a couple of weeks ago).
Now – by very ironic coincidence – Android 2.1 makes up 37.2% of all Android phones accessing the market in the last 2 weeks. Android 1.5 slips to second as they maintain about 34%, while Android 1.6 is still the least-used version with it making up 28% of the devices counted here (as usual, we’re not counting Android 1.1, 2.0, or 2.0.1 as they’ve been antiquated for some time, now).
As more handsets are launched with (LG Ally, Droid Incredible, HTC EVO 4G, and T-Mobile MyTouch Slide) and updated to (Samsung Moment, soon to be HTC Hero, and the original HTC Magic) Android 2.1, we expect this number to keep growing as the clock keeps ticking. When Android 2.2 releases this summer (most likely headed to the Nexus One, then the Motorola Droid) we’ll be keeping our eyes glued to Google’s platform versions site to see how the tides have changed with another major revision in contention.
Might I suggest the (unofficial) release of Eclair for the G1/MT3G by Cyanogen is playing a part here as well
Hopefully more handsets like the LG Eve will get upgraded to at least 1.6.
Doesn’t hurt that the HTC Eris users are starting to get their OTA update to 2.1
Yup, I got pushed 2.1 on my Eris Sunday night. Makes for quite a different and faster experience on the Eris. Got to be patient though for at times it looked like the phone has froze up but then would make a big skip from 3/4 the way done to finished in the progress bar on certain steps. Then it sat on the Verizon logo for quite a while before launching.

Just updated my Eris to 2.1 this past Saturday. With that update out, and Sprint having released the Samsung Moment upgrade (and the HTC Hero one soon as well), the market share of 1.5 devices is going to drop quite dramatically within the next couple months, I think. Of course, there’s still the G1/Dream, myTouch/Magic, and several other non-HTC Android phones out there, but many people with those devices will be upgrading soon, probably sometime this year, and will be getting something with 2.1 or higher.
Ok I’ve been curious about this every time I see a graph like this. Who is still using Android 1.1?
