At least 5,000 people at today’s Google I/O keynote were just handed a brand-new, completely awesome, and as of today outdated HTC EVO 4G. www.sadtrombone.com. The 4G — as we all know — is coming to market with Android 2.1. Much like the HTC Droid Incredible just came out with Android 2.1. And the HTC Desire, the myTouch 3G Slide to name a few more. But fear not, AndroidCentral reached out to HTC who wants you to know that “if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version.” Most likely…now that’s reassuring.
“This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can’t be more specific yet.”
The second half the year in Android OS update time could easily translate to Q1 2011 for all we know, but given the disastrous history that has been the shift towards Android 2.1, we’d hope they figured out all the kinks to getting updates ready to go and keeping their word on release schedules. After all, the second half could be as early as a few weeks from now.
