Droid Eris Isn’t Dead Thanks to Disney, Will Soon Enjoy Life as a Disney World Tour Guide

13

Well I’ll be. We all knew Verizon would be dropping the HTC Droid Eris from its lineup, but we didn’t know it’d be resurrected in this way: if you go to Disney World sometime in the future, you may be able to scoop up a GPS-enabled Tour Guide that’s essentially the Droid Eris with custom software and a feature-concealing jacket over it.

It’s not the prettiest of things, but at least the phone wasn’t forced into early retirement. Our only concern here would be battery life – surely you’d want to get at least 10-15 hours out of this thing for those long days in the Magic Kingdom when your kids just can’t seem to tire themselves out (that shouldn’t be much of a problem, though). The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. wow so this means you know exactly where all the rides are with the shortest waiting lines?

  2. I just want to point out that Epcot and the Magic Kingdom are at Disney WORLD not Disney Land

  3. The screenshot is a map of Epcot, and Epcot is not in Disneyland. Disneyland is in California, Epcot is at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. :-)

Here’s hoping for a Disney Android app. The Disney app that came out for the Verizon Get it Now store was actually decent–interactive map and wait times were included. Hopefully Disney’s use of the retired Eris means they are developing something similar or better for us Android users!

  4. pretty darn interesting.

  5. I knew Disney would use something like this but one can’t help but think of how many of those phones will be stolen.

  6. The jacket is probably to make this more durable since it will be passed around tons of kids who will drop it

  7. Tested this at EPCOT last weekend. Its a very good initial release. The 4 indicates there are 4 bonuses (coupons/discounts) available to you. Meal/merchandise discounts, free tours, movie preview screenings, etc.

Battery life needs some work. Our unit was on the last 10% after 4-5 hours. They need to make a standby or screen off mode. The unit never went into any kind of battery saving mode.

It provided tips (trivia) about the park based on your relative proximity to the item of interest. For example, walking by the France pavilion caused a tip about how they built their tenth scale Effiel tower using the original plans to appear.

  8. Wait, why are you guys spouting useless information about Disneyland/World? I did not see a mention of Disneyland in the above article.

  9. @Daniel: Because the original has been edited and is now correct.

  10. @Hendrix actually the original was correct before I edited. I actually re-edited that original edit after confirming. Epcot is – in fact – a part of Disney World as I first suggested.

  11. Oh the irony as Steve Jobs is Disney’s biggest shareholder. Disney Iphone fanbois (like the guy in the youtube video) are lamenting this.

  12. I had the Eris.Impossible to see in bright sunlight. And they do have bright sunlight in Florida!
