Holding off on that Dell Streak purchase due to it still being on Android 1.6? You may have reason to turn that frown upside down and turn that wallet inside out. The Android 2.1-based build of Dell Streak’s firmware has been leaked online. It’s said that this build is newer than the ones we’ve seen in videos, but we’re not sure if this build is final or near-final.
Users over at Modaco’s Forums – where the leak was originally posted – are reporting no noticeable issues (in fact, they have nothing but positive remarks). You can download the file you need here (we suggest using this mirror found deeper within the thread as the original link is a very slow download), and look below for the instructions after you’ve gotten it (written up by yours truly).
- Download the .pkg file and rename it to Update.pkg
- Transfer Update.pkg to the root directory of your microSD card.
- Shut the device off. While holding the volume up or down buttons, turn the device back on.
- You should now be in recovery mode. Select the second option.
- Wait, then wait some more, and you’re done! Let the phone reboot and enjoy Android 2.1 on your new Dell Streak.

[Update]: That previous file was only reportedly working for the UK version of the Streak, but an AT&T version is now available. Head on over to StreakSmart for more details.
