By Any Drake fans out there? No? Anyway, I always scoff at reports like these because they seem quite useless. Sony Ericsson wants to become the biggest supplier of Android-based products around the globe, says the company’s CEO Bert Nordberg. It’s quite an ambitious goal, but I call it useless because isn’t that the point of any business? To be the best?
I’m sure it’s not a realistic goal for small busines– actually, I take that back. Many of today’s bigger businesses started as small businesses (the old “Google, Apple, and Microsoft started in a garage” stories always come to mind). But with companies already established in today’s fast-paced market, it’d be a mistake not to reach for that goal.
How are they doing, anyway? Surprisingly enough, they own 17% of the global Android market share compared to 23% of the largest manufacturer – considering they’re able to keep up with the likes of HTC and Motorola with a comparatively-limited lineup, I must say they’re in a very good spot to reach that goal. If they continue doing what they’ve been doing since their first Android product was launched earlier this year – the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (with just three more Xperia Android-based handsets to follow since) – it might just happen sooner rather than later.

They need a better, more capable phone lineup. I been waiting for a killer phone from SE that is inspired by the K800i, Satio, and the X1. The K800i got in early 2007 with Front Facing Camera (which I never used) and a 3.2mp with true Xenon flash! WTF SE? you used to make great phones! Btw I’m in the US

Make a phone that runs current software versions and bring it to ALL markets, and you might have it.
I am actually quite upset at the fact that they have such a large percentage with such substandard phones when it comes to android OS support. There custom stuff rocks, but really, I want a phone worthy of 2010, not 2009. Advances are in the newer apps one can leverage on their android phone, are they behind the curve.
Did they say they “want to” or “plan to”? That kind of makes a difference, as the latter at least implies that they focusing their efforts in that area at least.
It’s too bad for SE that they passed on making the N1… they must have been kicking themselves after they saw how much mindshare HTC got by working hand and hand with Google.
Step 1: Expand beyond GSM.
Actions speak louder than words and going by their actions they clearly do NOT want to rule the Android world.
I own an X10 mini Pro, and I think this phone is awesome.
It’s always a mather of what the user is looking for. For me, I wanted a smartphone that was small and had a physical qwerty keyboard.
I’ve been shopping for a phone like this for two years, I was waiting to see if HTC was going to announce any physical qwerty keyboard phones at last March conference in Barcelona. Instead of HTC, Ericsson came out with the X10 Mini Pro, and in bonus to being small and the physical keyboard, I have a 5 MP camera!!!
It’s all about your needs, I don’t care about browsing the Internet on my phone, so I don’t care about the size of the screen. The bigger screen, means a bigger phone, a bigger phone means less space in my pocket, then it’s more unconfortable when you sit down on a chair or what ever. I don’t want to have to take out my phone of my pants at the restaurant or everytime I sit somewhere.
With the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro, I beleive Ericsson entered a market that did not really exist before. Beside Ericsson and LG, I havn’t seen any small Android phone on the market. I beleive the upcoming X8 will please a lot of people too.
You can say that they’re late, the phones uses older CPUs and have lower specs, and even have Android 1.6, when 2.2 is out, but sincerely, only Android enthusiast will care about the Android version it’s running. If some users needs specific features that are included only in newer Android version, than it’s sure is a deal breaker for them.
I’m satisfied with the 1.6 on my X10 Mini Pro, if 2.2 can speed things up a little, I’ll enjoy it, but it won’t prevent me from recommending this phone.
Bring it SE. The more Android enabled devices the better. Let’s bring Apple (A-Hole) to their knees. For crappy voice service, huge bandwidth caps, and a wall garden there’s Iphone for everything else their’s Droid.
@ 13, GSM is global, CDMA is only used in Canada and the US, and even the only two carrier that use CDMA in Canada, Bell and Telus, and moving away of CDMA.
They just built together a new HSDPA network, and their CDMA phone offering is getting smaller and smaller by the months.
It’s like you and your imperial units, the whole world use the metric system which is by far much more precise, but the US still use the imperial system.
i dont think the mass market cares if its got the latest version of android, they rarely change more than a few custom settings like ring tones and front screen pix.
what they care about is looks and stability.
the x10 is very stable, has 1.6 plus extensions and frankly is very very good. it could do with louder in call volume though

SE has always made great phones, I miss my old SE flip phone that had front facing camera and video capability 8 years ago! Plus the sound quality and reception have always been top notch compared to HTC and others. The only thing is they take way too long to get products to market, but if the X10 had shipped late last year like we thought, it might have been the biggest selling Android phone on the market. Let’s hope they can streamline their process and get the best phones out in people’s pockets.

Hopefully they are developing phones with the help of Google and they just skip 2.2 and go right to 3.0. I always wanted a Sony phone, there sliders are really nice. If the PSP phone ever comes about I would consider one to go along with my N1. I have a feeling the N1 is going to be going strong for a few more years.

Love SE phones! 17% of the population? Must be in Europe yes they have a chance to run the market, but they need to be up to date with the software for Gods Sakes! Give them some time HTC only has 23% and are producing crappy phones lately Motorola is stuck with VZ and growth is limited…….

It’s funny how people assume that if it sells in the US, then it mus be hit worldwide. Different people have different wants/needs/budget then we do in the US….. Hey, everybody, take a wild guess who sells the most handsets in the world?…. ready? it’s Nokia… yes, the company that has barely a presence in the US.
