This is one interview that just made my day. Speaking with Global Atlanta, Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg was put under the microphone and asked about several areas of the mobile phone business and how Sony fits into a circle that seems to be on the verge of exploding. He stressed that the “Sony” part of it was all about bringing a unique entertainment experience and that the Ericsson part was about bringing a great phone experience.
It’s worthy to mention him separating the two entities this way as we’ve long heard about a supposed PSP Phone in the works. That’s not anywhere near concrete, but the way he dances around the word and concept of “entertainment” deserves some attention. Toward the end of the interview, he was asked what he thinks the next big thing technological innovation would be in the smartphone market. His response? They have some big surprises in the next few months, and they never announce them in advance. (This was followed by a nice, hearty chuckle as if he gets enjoyment out of teasing us!)
He answered the question as if he knows for a fact that whatever their company is doing will be unrivaled by any other smartphone manufacturer, Android or otherwise. A PSP Phone would certainly be unrivaled, but again, nothing is confirmed. We’ll be keeping a very close eye on Sony Ericsson leading into 2011 as we expect them to bring out more than “just another phone.”
