If you’re on the East Coast you may have noticed the torrential downpours and monsoon-like winds running rampant around the area, but fans still turned out en masse to be the first to own the limited Motorola Droid 2 Empire Strikes Back Edition (I too braved the weather to get my hands on the Droid everyone was looking for, but more on that later). The Columbia, Maryland store opened early and featured staff dressed as characters from the Star Wars universe, including Obi Wan Kenobi, Chewbacca, and the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, Darth Vader.
Other fans around the country had to brave less treacherous conditions to snag the R2-D2 emblazoned handset, free shwag, and a chance to chill with Chewie, but reports rolling in show there was no lack of love for Verizon’s Star Wars-themed launch events.
The phone is available online and at select stores around the country. For a list of where you can snatch up a handset (if they aren’t already sold out) check out this post from yesterday. You can read up on the handset through the press release below.

now that’s the people i knew would be buying this phone…
The first picture alone, makes me happy I was nowhere near a local VZW store when these things were released…
I don’t like the appearance of the phone, but those extras do sound pretty awesome.
Oh dear. That truly is sad. It could be worse, though. It could be hoards of Apple fans showing up to the next Apple release wearing jeans and a black turtle neck.
Verizon R2D2 Droid finding new ways on how to not get laid.
These guys MUST be single! I’d be embarressed to use that phone in public and I like Star Wars!
@ Rob Schoenfield & @Chris
Oh, yeah. Let’s all pretend we’re getting laid and that we don’t like Star Wars. On a blog about Android Phones.
Yeah, everybody is totally fooled by your incredibly convincing act.
Trouble is it’s still a moto, cusomer service by Jar Jar Binks.
@SirWally LOL
Actually, I love Star Wars, but most people will look at your like a super geek if you wear the costumes (unless it’s Halloween)
i like star wars, not a geek about it though.. But i think this phone is butt ugly… I mean if i buy a NICE phone then i’m putting a cover on it which totally hides the whole point of this phone any way.
That has to be the nerdiest thing I have ever seen.
HAHA!! Ohbeone is one of those guys sportin the new R2D2 at 38 y/o livin in his Moms basement wondering why he’s still single. ROFL
