Dell Releasing an Android Version of the Venue Pro

24

According to PC World today, Dell’s planning to launch a phone that closely resembles their Windows Phone 7 smartphone – the Dell Venue Pro – with the main distinction being that it’ll run Android. Just for comparison’s sake, check out the highlights of the Venue Pro:

  • Stunning 4.1” WVGA AMOLED capacitive, multi-touch display
  • A full portrait QWERTY keyboard to provide a  better viewing & messaging experience
  • Supported with T-Mobile service
  • Elliptical, slender form provides elegance in a pocket-friendly size
  • Gorilla Glass for unprecedented durability and scratch resistance

They also detailed some of the software aspect, but a lot of that can change going from one operating system to the other. Check Dell’s blog out for more on that, if you want. But we fully expect the Venue Pro to be a capable device to introduce Windows Phone 7 to Dell’s fanbase. (And with a 1GHz Snapdragon, 1GB of ROM, 1GB of RAM, a slide-up QWERTY keyboard, and a 4.1-inch AMOLED display, it’s as capable as capable will get, these days.) With that, we guess we shouldn’t expect any less from an Android version.

I think I would jump for something like this. The form factor attacks the Blackberry space quite nicely and the aesthetics don’t look too bad. A successful experience would ultimately come down to software so we’ll be keeping a close eye on it to see just how much experience Dell’s gotten with Android.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. That’d be pretty nice :D

  2. I’m not sure whether a qwerty portrait slider or landscape slider feels better. A lot of times I enter text one-handed, but usually when I do that it’s a quick text message and I use swype instead of the physical keyboard anyways.

Anyways, it looks like the right size, the right display type, and the right specs, so I’ll keep it on my radar.

  3. Looks like a Motorola keyboard….. yuck

  4. Perhaps I may have to hold on to my Tour a bit longer until this releases instead of getting the Droid Semi-Pro…

  5. 1 GB of RAM? Interesting.

  6. I wouldn’t buy it. It’s too long. I’d prefer a portrait slider if I had to have a keyboard, althought I don’t like having a brick in my pocket. With the SlideIt app, I don’t need a physical keyboard anymore. For those who prefer to not use SlideIt or Swype, Smart Keyboard Pro and SwiftKey are incredible virtual QWERTYs, and more than a match for a physical keyboard.

  8. if this was 1 of verizon’s 1st lte phones, i’d definitely buy asap

  9. The viewable area of the screen looks really small to be 4.1″.

  10. When I first saw this phone on another website, I thought, “Wow, thats a great looking phone and exactly the form factor I want! If only it ran Android on Verizon!”. Well, it’ll get android, but I doubt the verizon part will come true any time soon.

Are you sure that the venue Pro has 1GB of RAM? Other websites are reporting that it actually has 512 MB of RAM

  12. I would hate being on the internet and having to constantly keep flipping my phone to portrait mode to enter text, but then again this phone is not really aimed at me.

  13. wow!! 1GB of RAM??!! So far is the hihgest one that i ever heard from a mobile devic, if it’s true!! Attractive~

  14. Landscape Sliders are better for true typing comfort. But if they really wanted to sell this…theyd bring it to Sprint or VZW. Sprint will prolly never get the Torch…but this would DEFINITIELY have me forget about that.

  15. Looks awsome. Too bad Tmo is getting the wp7 one

  16. 1G of **RAM**? Is that the requirement for WP7? Good God, man. Oh well, more to play with when people start putting Android on WP7 handsets. Or when OEMs do it themselves! Wee!

  17. After Dell’s launch of the Streak, which I had high hopes for, this one is going to be a wait and see. Hopefully they’ve learned something from the Streak launch.

  18. wish it were from htc

  19. come to verizon plz!

  20. has anyone noticed that it looks oftly like the thunder? att ant then a cdma verizon verison coming. yay!

  21. damn that DELL LOGO makes it ugly

  22. Other websites are reporting that the Dell Venue Pro has 512mb of RAM. I’m confused as to which is right?

  23. Ugly ass phone only from Dell.

  24. I played with the Win Phone 7 version of this phone yesterday; it is very nice. Keyboard really feels nice, weight and balance are very nice, and the screen is gorgeous…much brighter than my Droidx. If this comes in an Android version, I think I would really like.
