And what exactly is 4G?
It’s a marketing term designed to show a significant leap in speed between the old 3G network. Nothing more. There’s no technical specs behind using the name. No requirement that it has to be “such and such” new revolutionary technology. It’s all about speed. And, currently, T-Mobile’s 4G speeds are on par with on 4G “such and such” speeds from both Spring and tests from Verizon’s upcoming network.
Oh and some food for thought: there are people who argue, based on technical specs, that LTE and WiMax aren’t “technically” 4G either.

true. but when sprint said they had the first 4G network with WiMax, 4G was not officially defined. Now that it is, you know neither is 4G but WiMax can be upgraded to WiMax 2 later. HPSA+ cannot. Just saying….

@Geoff: actually it is a technical spec, defined by the ITU. The two technologies are 802.11m (Sprint’s Wimax is 802.11e, so not 4G) and LTE (I forget the details but Verizon’s LTE is like Sprint’s Wimax: the wrong kind to be technically 4G). In the US they bastardise the monikers, they did the same thing with 3G that they’re doing with 4G. It’s part of why wireless in the US is so craptacularly sad compared to the rest of the developed world.
Just calling out the false advertising. Either way, faster speeds is good no matter who’s “4G” network it is. No complaints on speeds here.
Which is better, the G2 or the Nexus One?
I really like the g2, but I don’t need the hardware keyboard. If the g2 is better, I think I can live w/ the hardware keyboard.
Also, which one will gets updates faster? So which one will get gingerbread faster?

the g2 is faster. and they’re both stock android so they should receive gingerbread first or sooner than most other android phones. depends on your preference. I will say this, the nexus one is still the official android developer device.
But isn’t the n1 outdated? If they dont sell it in stores, or for that matter ,anywhere, what’s the point?? I really like both phones, but that damn hardware keyboard on the g2 is idiotic for me. I don’t know, also, the n1 doesnt have hspa+, so that’s there too.

I think your best option is just to hold out a bit longer. google will be announcing gingerbread sometime this month. they might give some info about the rumors going on about the nexus 2 and if they are true, that surely must be the must have device for devs. if not well, i guess it’s up to you.

Well tmobile says HSPA+ will be upgraded to 42Mbps next year then 84Mbps and so on so it will reach and surpass 100Mbps.

I personally think t-mobile should of done this long ago getting more offensive and stuff but its up to them hopefully they do good.

Given the choice of a G2 or N1, I would still keep my N1. It’s got a faster processor, amoled screen, and noise cancellation technology. The keyboard and high rom memory doesn’t matter to me since I have a 16GB class 10 microSD which is fast enough and large enough for me to store apps. Especially with Froyo, most apps are stored on the microSD anyways. The latter is very useful when I have to go to data centers and need to call people while in front of racks of machines. People can still hear me very well in that environment. The N1 is still for sale as a dev phone which means it’s not going to be locked down like other phones. You can always pay the android dev fee and buy the N1 if you really want it.

If I were phone shopping I’d wait for a high Res display. The I4 looks amazing and its only like 960×640. So to me, any phone that still has 800×480 is basically outdated. Sitting side by side with the I4 my nexus and vibrant look like cat shit smeared on construction paper. But with fewer features obviously apple sucks, so I’d wait for the next wave of android devices.
The faster chip is easily in the G2…its a 2nd gen scorpion and has been overclocked to a stable 1.42 ghz and its gpu is far better…N1 will get updates faster but when the updates like Honeycomb and Ice Cream come around the N1 should be really outdated…G2 should be able to get the updates…I already own both these phones haha but if i were u i would also wait to see if the Nexus S is true even tho its a Snamsnung it still should be a great handset..

Er, no. The G2 has a second-gen Snapdragon on a 45nm die. It beats the snot out of the N1’s first-gen processor, even though it’s clocked lower. And the G2’s GPU is significantly better.

What are you smoking? The iPhone may have better resolution, but the Vibrant’s SAMOLED screen makes it look like ghosty crap. True blacks and amazing contrast ratio? Play a video and tell me the iPhone’s screen is better. The iPhone is better for text, but the SAMOLED is more than good enough in that sense. When you play video or games, the iPhone looks like washed out crap in comparison.
I’ve got some friends who are iPhone snobs. Every time one of them has tried to show off their Retina Display around me they leave with their tail between their legs.
One of them tried to get smart with me once..I saw him turn his LCD brightness up all the way first, then I shot him a link (using Share from a Picasa Web Album in my Gallery) to a photo with some green lights from a concert. It looked pee-green on the Retina Display, lacked any punch, had a greyish background, didn’t look like much. On my Epic it was a bold, punchy extremely saturated green with deep blacks. He had to admit it looked better. Then when I told him my brightness was all the way down and it looked better than his all the way up he was downright embarrassed.
As for T-Mobile..it’s a gutsy advert, and I like it. I wouldn’t hold back on a G2 if I were looking for another mobile.

3G/4G questions…
anytime 4G is mentioned it seems that the comments segway to the “its not real 4G”, and several inaccurate comments (and assumptions). I checked wikipedia “4G” (and ieee 802.16m) at the bottom of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G there is a nice table, and just above that there is a history of “4G”. very informative.
granted it wikipedia, but it matches up with what i’ve read.
also, if 4G is 100MiB/s then why wasn’t 3G 10MiB/s? i guess that was marketing again. i hate marketing. I can’t rem when any ad/marketing release has had any accuracy in it. (imho)

G2 will be one of the first phones to get updated probably around or just shortly after the n1. if the mt3g is still getting updated at this point, the g2 will at least have that kind of life seeing as how its on par or better in everyway than the current gen of phones

As far as G2 getting updates…It is a pure Google experience device and when OTA’s com it will be 2nd only to the N1. Like others have said, the G2 has proven to be the bigger powerhouse though.

the G2 doesn’t have nice stock Android…. the thing is, that; T-Mobile only ever so slightly modified Android 2.2 on the G2, so as to appear that its been unaltered, which means any future android releases will have to go through t-mobile first, unlike the Nexus One that receives it first.
T-Mobile is keeping their eye on the G2’s WiFi tether feature.

Well when the Gingerbread OTA comes I guarantee the G2 will be 2nd to get the update. Now I am not saying it will be the 2nd device to have it as it will launch on a new handset most likely.

@s IMO you should get a nexus because the g2 isn’t truly stock tmobile has removed certain key features such as mobile hotspot which comes stock with stock 2.2 . The Nexus one is the only true stock android phone on the american market if you can find one. 2.3 is coming around and the n1 will have it as soon as it drops later this month I suspect. When 2.3 hits the g2 tmobile will once again most likely block whatever part of the os that doesnt suit their needs. Dude get a nexus

I would read long and hard about all the problems associated with the N1, such as data connection and touchscreen issues. The G2 has a much better processor that’s more battery-efficient, HSPA+, an S-LCD screen (correct me if I’m wrong), and a way better GPU. It may not be so bone stock that Google themselves update it, but it won’t take long for it to get Gingerbread and then Honeycomb. It’s keyboard makes it a little heavy, but the z-hinge design keeps it pretty darn thin for a qwerty phone. I’m deciding between it and the MT4G. Unless concrete info on this Nexus S rumor comes to light. But then, you can’t go wrong with either of those three phones.
I def agree w/ you there, I am waiting to see what happens with this new rumored nexus. What do you think I should do? Wait and see w/ the new nexus or just go ahead and get the g2. Like I said, I don’t want or need the keyboard, but if I have to get it, I will.

The Nexus One hardware actually does support HSDPA, but it’s not enabled in the stock N1 firmware. However, Cyanogen enables it. I’m not sure what the difference is between HSDPA and HSPA+ though.
