A few of you have raced to your computers and made no delay in letting us know that your HTC Magic has pulled down an update and it wasn’t just for maintenance: you got Froyo! Those on Vodafone might be late to the party, but the saying goes that you’re better late than never. It sure is a lot better than being stuck on Android 1.6 where A LOT of new apps aren’t supported. And folks from as far away as Serbia are seeing an update, as well, but we can’t confirm which carrier that is. As for you Vodafone folks, everything you need to know is straight ahead. [via Vodafone] [Thanks, CikaBole!]
PS: You’ll be getting everything that Froyo enables except WiFi Hotspot support, Live Wallpapers, and Flash video. Surely you understand why: the phone just isn’t powerful enough to do all of that. Look forward to everything else, though!
How will customers get the latest software?
Customers’ devices will receive an automatic notification when the update is available for their handset. They can then choose to accept the update by following the on screen prompts or perform it later.
The roll out of the software is phased, so not all customers will receive this notification at once.
Because it is quite a large update, we’d recommend customers carry it out over WiFi, although it is possible to download it over 3G or GPRS.
The update is a two step download which will be triggered by automatic notification to the customer’s handset. The first step will change the bootloader. The second step will install FroYo after the phone has rebooted.Checking software versions
To check which version of software the HTC Magic has:
1. Press the menu key, then touch “Settings”, scroll down to and touch “About phone”
2. The software version will be displayed here
LOL i sold it on ebay last month..now i’m on a broken (aka defective) nexus one, way to go
tmobiles mytouch has lwp and mobile hotspot on 2.2
Is this phone the same as the mt3g 3.5?
I see absolutely no reason why HTC shouldn’t release Froyo for other phones of the same era, such as the Hero – c’mooooon, HTC!
would love to see some froyo love on the mt3g with the 3.5 mm jack for t mobile. just bought the g2 absolutly love 2.2 gave my gf my mt3g, it def needs the upgrade.
they’ve been promising an update for almost a year, so i’ll believe this when i see it. never ever vodafone again.
got my update today all up and running i think, not had a chance to check it all yet.
Been waiting so long…. they promised 2.2 for the mt3.5, but i have yet to see it. I have the Fender, and i never even got 2.1, come on
Wow didn’t expect that. Maybe I would have bought one then instead of Samsung Galaxy Apollo???
The MyTouch 3G 3.5 wont be getting froyo in America until the original MyTouch 3G finishes it’s upgrade which was delayed thaen said to finish this month. Who knows when we will get 2.2
From everything I’ve heard and read, the original mt3g updates are done.
I asked tmobile rep, and was told Dec 15 for froyo 3.5mm.
I was running cyanogenmod 6.0 (froyo) on my original mytouch 3g (no 3.5mm).
I ended up switching back to cyanogenmod 5.0.8 (donut), because froyo was just too much for such a slow cpu and limited memory
2 weeks later I got a tmobile g2…
Any idea if this update will work on the ion/magic that we received at google i/o 2009, I use it as a test platform.
Just verified that the HTC Magic and mt3g 3.5 both have 288 ram! Good news!!
Just left vodafone today because I was fed up of being stuck on 1.6 – typical!
Thanks God, patience long wait for the update has finally come……..It is just we trust in god and wait.and finally the joy in abundance
Its a vry good news of launching 2.2.But how can it to be Upgraded?????
