The phone takes the cake as the world’s slimmest at just 9.2mm thick.

The Optimus Black features a NOVA display “designed to be the brightest, clearest and most readable among mobile screens with 700 nits  of brightness for optimal visibility.” The display also reduces power consumption by 50 percent compared to traditional LCD technology.

The phone is rolling out globally in the first half of this year. Look for videos and hands-on to come, but for now enjoy the press release below.

LG introduces next generation smartphone design and display with LG Optimus Black

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5, 2011 – LG Electronics (LG) announced today it will unveil a new Android smartphone, LG Optimus Black, at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) from January 6th in Las Vegas. Providing users with a dramatically brighter 4-inch NOVA display in the world’s slimmest 9.2 mm mobile device, LG Optimus Black creates a one-of-a-kind user experience unlike anything before.

Available for the first time in the mobile market, LG Optimus Black’s NOVA display is designed to be the brightest, clearest and most readable among mobile screens with 700 nits of brightness for optimal visibility. LG Optimus Black provides users with an easier and more natural experience when browsing the web, reading emails, or writing documents with higher levels of brightness and pure white tones that deliver true black and white colors for ideal handset viewing. NOVA technology featured on LG Optimus Black also enables users to maintain visibility whether indoors or outdoors under strong sunlight.

In addition to greater luminosity, the NOVA display on LG Optimus Black also radically reduces power consumption by 50 percent during general indoor use compared to a conventional LCD. Similarly, AMOLED consumes twice as much power as NOVA to display a full white screen, the most frequently used color scheme for web browsing. Combined with the 1500 mAh battery of the LG Optimus Black, users will have enough power for their daily needs, even at maximum brightness settings.

Users will never be out of style with the LG Optimus Black’s ultra slim 9.2 mm design. Making a strong visual statement, LG Optimus Black weighs only 109g and offers sleek lines and smooth edges that improve handheld grip. Tapering down to the world’s thinnest smartphone profile of 6.0 mm, LG Optimus Black’s subtle back arch helps to create the illusion of even greater slimness. Unique to the LG Optimus Black, the flush and flawless finish of the front display is achieved by innovatively hiding the Invisible Receiver behind the edges of the phone.

“We are excited to introduce this stylish new Android smartphone and expect the LG Optimus Black to play a key role in the mobile market,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG Optimus Black reflects our core strengths of advanced technology, in both display and design, offering the world’s brightest screen and the world’s slimmest design in an attractive and smart package.”

The LG Optimus Black also offers a set of smarter features designed for easy and faster access to important apps and content. Optimus UI 2.0 lets users directly access messages, emails and missed calls from the locked screen with just one single finger tap. The Gesture UI offers more intuitive commands, including lifting, shaking and tapping, for taking calls, entering camera mode, or enjoying music. LG Optimus Black also introduces the world’s first Wi-Fi Direct™ for quick and high-quality data transfer between mobile devices and adopts the world’s first 2MP front-facing camera.

All LG Optimus Black features are available on the Android 2.2 Froyo platform with Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade capability. Utilizing the 2MP front-facing camera, LG Optimus Black allows users to utilize video telephony functions of higher quality after upgrading to Android’s Gingerbread.

The LG Optimus Black will be rolled out globally in the first half of 2011.

  1. what’s the resolution of the screen?

  2. “Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade capability” — What does this mean? Do we have the option when we get the phone or do they mean that they may make an update available later?

  3. what in the hell do you think? that is a stupid question

  4. What carriers in the US are getting this?

  5. @anon

It’s another way of saying we will be updating it to 2.3. I don’t see anyone giving us the option at launch. That would be so funny.

  6. I just want to know which carrier will be getting this bad boy. I love T-Mobile but who ever get’s this will have me as a customer (except verizon).

  7. Design is a complete iPhone rip off. Real original, LG. Their products suck anyway.

  8. Not bad.. even tho I went through so many LG phones I still like them! Env 2 was the best!!

  9. well im guessing lots of perfectly good phones right now will become hand-me-downs when this arrives

  10. @do not want, pretty funny. how does lg rip off the iphone? this isn’t even possible. apple rips off lg, who rips off apple later? sorry. this looks a lot like my old vx5500 which I like. lg’s always had solid feeling products. I’m anxious to see how they can reassert themselves in the android/smartphone market.

  11. @anon
The US galaxy S versions were described as having froyo upgrade compatibility. Basically they are saying that they probably will upgrade the firmware to gingerbread, but no telling when.

  12. Yeah, total ripoff of iphone design. The funniest thing though, is the exact clone of Samsung’s TouchWiz…which is an iphone ui knockoff. All I can say about this phone is ewwwwww

  13. Silly LG press conference, we hardly know any spec detail.

Does it have a led notification light
    How much memory
    How much internal storage

????? Come on LG Camera samples aswell?

  14. What kind of processor? Dual Core?

  15. i thought this phone was suppose to be the first dual core smartphone ? yet nowhere they talk about the CPU in the press release. Maybe i’m confused, too many phones.

Either way this phone is hot as hell.

iphone rip-off my ass, they don’t have a fail antenna.

  16. Wat design does an iphone have anyway? Any phone the is keyboardless w a plain black face looks like an iphone!

Imo all these phones look the same… iphone galaxy s etc…

Had an droid og and now have a htc g2… both w characteristc design (stress on word design)

  17. that pic is wrong. if you look on engadget, you notice the LG Black has the same UI as the Optimus S,T,etc. It’s now called “Optimus UI 2.0”. The fake Touchwiz UI is on the 2X and the Revolution. The LG Black doesn’t have it.

  18. @techguy: Prepare not to be a customer then. Don’t know why you would not want to be a customer of the best wireless provider in the country, but, hey, to each his/her own.

  19. SCREEN RESOLUTION: 800 x 480
    U.S. CARRIER: T-Mobile

As to the guy with the username: “Dont Want Cuz Im Not Gay” and all you apple fanboys out there: – You just keep drinking that apple flavored kool-aid. Keep buying a new iphone every year as they spoon-feed you additional features. There’s no need to insult other brands.

    Be well…

  20. @daddy
agree vzw all the way ha especially with LTE

  21. @ don’t want. Take a look at the LG Prada (2007) and tell me who copied who.

  22. 2 megapixels?….you’ve got to be fuckin’ kidding me. =__=
the resolution had better be good.

  23. another bullshit apple wanna be phone from the “competition” FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!! apple wins yet again!!!

  24. I agree that it look a bit like an iPhone. I hate copycat mentality. HTC and Motorola at least try produce something different. I hate the way the logo has to be so prominent on the front.

  25. I don’t see how it’s copying the iPhone. There are only two ways to make a touch screen phone: round edges or squared edges. Back bump or no bumps. Stop hating on great phones and stop being such apple fanboys.

  26. To: fckapple – 2 Megapixels is the rating for the FRONT FACING CAMERA. No kidding… In fact, it is the first smartphone with a 2mp front facing camera.

  27. My hot flashes are gone and so are my muscle cramps. I haven’t suffered from allergies since I started and I’m off 6 medications. Search the web for “Hypersonic Weight Loss”

  28. IS THIS A DUAL CORE TEGRA 2?
