Verizon: Motorola XOOM No Longer Requires One Month of Data to Unlock WiFi

19

Verizon’s heard the uproar over rumored activation practices they were reportedly using to make sure all XOOM owners bought at least one month of data service from the carrier. The practice would see all purchasers of the off-contract 3G model having to pay for at least one month of data service in order to activate WiFi.

Electronista has heard from Verizon, though, that they will no longer be doing that. Rejoice! But we know most of you are still just waiting for that WiFi-only model. We are too.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Thanks to phan sites like this one.

  2. Hell yeah. Now lower the price in 3..2..1..

  3. What was they ever thinking…way to many options for a company to strong arm their customers…this works for those Apple Fanboys, but Android customers are privileged with choice!

  4. it is 8:25AM New York time, Bestbuy open at 10am, inly 1 hour 35 minutes to go!!!!

  5. For quite awhile, I thought that $800 is ridiculous. Then I remembered that I was seriously considering one of these:

I would love to see tablets be able to double as a computer keyboard like the tactus. Just my opinion. (If you check out that site, check out the optimus maximus – every key has a removable, customiozable OLED screen. Coolest keyboards ever. Although for the price, they should be.)

  6. ooh yea be getting mine after work

  7. For the price of a XOOM I could buy TWO Viewsonic gTablets. Once rooted & ROMmed, these things flat-out ROCK! It’s easy to do and the tablet is worth every penny I paid for it.

You guys have fun with your XOOMs :)

  8. Best Buy let me walk out with no data plan whatsoever

  9. if you read the thread on the moto support forums- this has been the case all along. Verizon had no such rule. Some 3rd party retailers MIGHT try to get you to sign up for data in order to allow you to purchase from them because they get a kickback from verizon for activations.

  10. They only get the kickback if you keep service for a minimum of 2 months.

  11. Still debating whether or not to buy it soon or just wait for the WiFi version. Any information on when the WiFi version is to be released?

  12. i’m going over there in April, from europe, partly to get my eager hands on a wifi-only Xoom. :-)

  13. An admirable move to negate something that should have never been considered in the first place. Verizon seriously needs someone in the war room slapping people on the back of the heads saying…no, bad, marketing exec.

  14. I went today and they were still requiring the month to month plus a $35 activation fee. That killed the deal for me.I just want wifi only,

  15. i’m still waiting on a wifi only model , or i’ll just wait on the 4G models to ship….in six months

  16. i don’t to wait for wifi-only version, because I want the black 4G Xoom^^ will buy mine tomorrow.

  17. Went to local(jax) BB hour after opening and I was the first to even look at one.Too big for me, will stick with the portability of my Galaxy Tab.

  18. update i called Verizon and they got it for me with out having to pay the 1month activation Fee. So ill get my Xoom tomorrow.

  19. I picked up the Xoom about a couple hours ago at the Verizon kiosk where I work and did not have to activate or get a data plan.

So far, I’m liking it a lot. I have a ways to go to get everything set on it, but so far it’s snappy and light on it’s feet.
