CDMA Xperia Play (Verizon) Hits the FCC With SIM Card Slot

17

We’re getting closer and closer to Verizon’s launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (it was originally rumored to be here at the middle of this month) and we’ve inched even further with this weekend’s FCC appearance. It’s not your ordinary FCC ordeal, either.

Shots of the device’s innards tell of a SIM card slot not unlike the ones Verizon use for their 4G LTE devices and phones. It’s unlikely that this is a 4G phone, though, otherwise Verizon would’ve been advertising that from the get-go. Verizon could announce availability of the device with quiet mention of it being a world phone like a few of their DROID offerings as of late. [via Wireless Goodness]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Perhaps they’ll offer 4G upgrades for it, so that those people who say “[they] don’t need 4G because it’s not in [their] area yet” will get the phone, and then upgrade to 4G when it’s available.

    1. Doubtful. it would have to have the LTE radio installed and they would have used that as another big selling point. Most likely just a world phone.

      1. I agree that it’s unlikely, but we can’t rule it out. They did it with the XOOM after all

        1. Yes but they announced it was 4g compatible which was another selling point. This not so much. Just that it can play games it doesnt mention anything about being 4g but guess we will find out once its released.

  4. Fair point. Out of curiosity, would it not be possible to upgrade any device with a VZW SIM card to 4G if Verizon was willing to? Send it in, replace the radio, update the firmware, boom. 4G device. I’m not saying that this is what they’re planning, I’m just curious.

  7. Lte or global. Either one is a go. This and my Droid X are going to hold me down till December when I get something quad core. Can’t wait!

  8. Actually Verizon hasnt really said anything at all about this phone so who really knows weather it will be 3G or 4G . The jerks havent even told us a release date or price yet . This would be a #1 seller if it were 4G LTE .
