Pocket Now received some marketing materials via an anonymous tipster showing off another addition to Verizon’s Android lineup, the Casio G’zOne Commando. This heavy duty phone seems to be aimed at the working man or Bear Grylls wanna-be and touts full resistance to shock, water and dust (what, no bullets?).
Besides being used as a weapon, the phone includes a 3.6 inch Gorilla Glass display, 800×480 screen resolution, 5 megapixel camera, 800Mhz processor and 512MB RAM. Casio was also gracious enough to load it with some of their custom G’zGEAR apps like a thermometer, pedometer and digital compass.
Its also listed that it will be shipping with Android 2.2 Froyo and what looks like some kind of custom UI as a topping. As far as a Gingerbread update is concerned, I’d go off Casio’s track record with Android phones except they have none.
Update: Android Central has receieved a leaked release date and its looks like you can go Commando (I’m sorry, I had to) starting April 28th.

I would love a phone like this if it actually takes great pictures. When I go MTB’ing, my phone is always on my mind. I crash a lot and worry that I am going to ruin my phone. I would love to not have to carry ten devices. It would be nice to have a faster processor though!
Don’t be discouraged by the processor speed just yet. We don’t know what exactly what kind of processor it is. If it’s one of the processor’s from Qualcomm’s scorpion line, then it’ll be plenty fast and overclockable. Clock speed isn’t everything either. Look at the LG Optimus. 600 mhz processor yet a VERY snappy little phone :)
I’ve been waiting for this for awhile. Any word on whether it will be water resistant like the rest of the Casio line? Would love to take it canoeing.
if you click on the picture, it does say that under unique phone features. should be sweet.
it IS water proof. I dropped mine in the lake and lost it in the snow while snowboarding and it didn’t affect it at all.
holy fuck that is ugly.
Serious. I understand that it is a rugged phone but at least make it something which you wouldn’t mind using in public. At least the Defy looks good.
Actually it looks pretty badass compared to any other rugged phone. (that I know of)
I just switched to sprint and my company pays my bills, but may have them get me this verizon phone for when on certain jobsites and pay for sprint myself. I used to love my old gzone as it had fallen off a 3rd story, bounced off concrete and landed in a puddle… Kept on ticking…. The only other phone I had last a fall like that (and I have went through a lot of phones) was the OG droid. It went down about 20′ and I cringed just knowing it was gone. I went down after talking to the architect and not only found it in working condition, but only a small dent about the size of a large gnat (or small ass fly) on the lower left hand of the slideout keyboard (YMMV on that dumb ass luck though)
Compared to the Defy this thing looks terrible.
Casio makes phones? The cheap black plastic calculator watch business must not be doing well.
It might be an 800 mhz processor like in the G2 which is plenty fast
Sweet…my phone will be safe when I’m motorboating!
This is an incredible phone for those who do a lot of physical activity and don’t want a fragile device. I had the original GzOne a couple of years ago and it was honestly one of the best phones I’ve ever owned. I do a lot of camping, hiking, snowboarding, mtn biking etc and this phone can withstand anything you throw at it. Literally! I’ve lost it in the snow for a couple of hours, dropped it in the lake while fishing, and dropped it on a number of occassions doing a lot ofdifferent things and this device handled it all with no problems. It also got great reception and call quality was top notch. For those weekend warriors, construction workers or anyone that needs a rugged phone, this is one of the best you’ll find. I didn’t think much when I heard “Casio” too (first thing that came to mind was calculator), but it really is an incredible device that is virtually indestructable!
I might be mistaken but I believe that the Original Casio G’Zone phones were developed by both Casio and LG. I wonder if that partnership continued on this phone?
So basically it’s a DEFY.
I’ve own the G’Zone and took video’s and pix underwater in Hawaii at around 15 ft underwater. I use the flashlight on it almost everyday and night and bieng one of the most toughest phones EVER I’ve not upgrade it even though my contract has allowed me over 3 upgrades since I bought it. It’s like a 911 Tubro Porshe…what the hell am I supoose to “upgrade” to? When the Bridgade came out I thought about it, but I knew that Casio was working on this and have been waiting. Every person in the MILITARY OVERSEAS and many, many White Water River Guides, Ski Instructors, Wilderness Expedition Experts and others will make this new Casio Commando a top seller……so I’ll be trading the 911 Turbo in for the Turbo Charged 4X4 Cayenne with Bilstein Racing Suspension and Mud Tires…..performance with off-road capabilites…….BoooooooooYaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!
