Palm Pre Gets In On Some Gingerbread AOSP Lovin’

21

Alright, you can definitely file this under “awesome.” A Palm Pre developer that goes by the name of k3dar over PreCentral Forums has managed to get Android dual-booting on his Palm Pre. The port is nowhere near ready for prime-time (and most likely wont ever be) but I was honestly impressed at how well he got AOSP Android 2.3 Gingerbread running on an old 600Mhz OMAP 3430 processor.

K3dar was also gracious enough to provide us with a video of his feat for your viewing pleasure. Protip: You might want to mute/turn down your speakers before watching.

While I appreciate a good Android port as much as the next guy, I’m still waiting to see someone port Web OS or even Windows Phone 7 over to non ancient hardware like an Evo or G2X. What about you guys? What mobile OS would you not mind dual-booting into from time to time? (Responding with iOS will get you immediately banned from the internet. For life.)

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. Honestly, I wish Android people didn’t hate so much on iOS cuz then maybe SOMEONE would make an iOS port.
I actually think it would be kinda cool… “You get the BESSSSST of both worlds!”

    1. But that’d be getting like the best phone…not going to happen. ;-).
Company A will have the best Processor.
Company B has the best Display.
Company C has the best Battery Life (okay, so I lied about that one).

And in the end, it’s all up to use to chose which one fits us most. :D

    2. Most hate because they like being one sided with a big crowd.

    3. The reason as to why it is easier with Android is because Android is open source. Closed systems like iOS and WP7 would be extremely difficult to port (at least I’d imagine).

    4. Chris you are so right. I’ve been following you since your EmoGamer days and I think you would have more influence on YouTube or on here to have a developer challenge to get someone to port Windows series 7 or Web OS onto an android device.

    5. I was just getting ready to say the same thing. I just like seeing different things like this, no matter what the platform is.

  2. I think web OS on the nexus s would be pretty cool.

  3. I Love Android, Owned It Since The G1 Days
But I Have An iOS Device Right Now..
Gotta Say, Its Exhilarating Having Both..
Theres A Lot More You Can Tweak With iOS
But Theres Alot More You Can Do With Android

    1. Another person that likes the iPhone …and isnt so fanboyish about it!!

Someone get this man a beer!!! If he is old enough to drink…

  4. Forgive my insolence, but it seems like software is all the current Palm devices have going for them these days, so roughly porting an (excellent) OS that runs slowly (due to the fact it was quickly done) to fairly demeaning hardware is beyond me.

  5. Brotiprndt.

  6. Sorry about that my back button decided not to work.

    Any, Brotip:

  7. i’d want WIndows Phone 7 and Android

  8. I’d like to see Win 7 and Android…. yeaaa man

  9. sad to see a PALM phone get gingerbread before all the android phones released within the week

  10. someone was working on porting webOS to the HTC Hero once.. didn’t go anywhere though. it’s so hard with a closed source OS(okay, parts of webOS are open source but mostly, it isn’t). I’d love to see it happen though. I miss my old pre.. I only had it for a week before it broke. the hardware on those things was horrible but the software was pretty cool. I’d still pick android over webOS, but webOS definitely has a lot to off and if I could have both, that would be amazing. WP7 would be pretty sweet too

    1. I like where this is going. We should find someone who can create triple boot WebOS WP7 Android….Webdrone7 it shall be called

      1. I would definitely go for that. Even dual booting any of the 2 you mentioned. Well…it would have to be Android and any of the other 2…lol

  11. I’d love to see WebOS on some solid hardware. The OS is very good, what killed it was delicate, fragile hardware. (Yes, I’m a Pre Minus user.)

  12. Why is this surprising? I’ve been running gingerbread on mg HTC Eris for about 4 no that now xD 528 vs. 600? I’d love to have that extra power in my phone but gingerbread runs like butter nonetheless because of Tazz. :) xda dev ftw!!!

  13. I was just getting ready to say the same thing. I just like seeing different things like this, no matter what the platform is.
