Google & Sprint Gearing Up to Launch NFC Payments Program May 26th?

11

Get that rumor mill spinnin’, boy! The latest is from Bloomberg who cites three unnamed sources familiar with Google’s plans to unveil a new NFC payments service on May 26th. And I bet you already know which carrier they’re partnering up with here in the United States. Yep, you guessed it – Sprint.

After competitors Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile teamed up with ISIS for NFC payments, Google was left with only one choice out of the 4 biggest carriers. It’ll be an interesting race to watch as Google and Sprint take on what we assume will be a bigger force.

Also interesting is how Google was the one who spear-headed the NFC movement here in the United States but couldn’t seem to grab the interest of three of the nation’s biggest carriers. We’re fairly positive they had mobile payments in mind when introducing the Nexus S and Android 2.3, and we’re fairly positive they wanted many of the US’ providers to be on in it .

It makes us wonder why the other three carriers didn’t opt to join Google or, conversely, why Sprint didn’t opt to join ISIS. They were all obviously contacted by ISIS to get the ball rolling. I can’t imagine ISIS didn’t reach out to Sprint.

Sprint held out and are now joining forces with Google for NFC payments – they must’ve known of Google’s plans at the same time they knew of ISIS’. And just as I can’t imagine ISIS didn’t reach out to Sprint, I can’t imagine Google didn’t reach out to the other big three carriers here in the states.

We’ll never know why the carriers decided to side with who they sided with, but at least all of them are putting their eggs into the NFC basket. We’ll be anticipating details to come on May 26th. Sprint and Google are said to first trial the service in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. [Bloomberg]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. I hope google teaming up with sprint means the new nexus will come quicker to sprint because now that I’m definitely not buying the EVO 3d I would like a *proper nexus with 4g and better hardware.

    1. Agreed the Evo 3d is now a no go for me so hopefully a good nexus device comes to Sprint, I am not buying a samsung too many bad experiences.

      1. I felt a aluminum body HTC phone and I was amazed, too bad Sammy can’t do
that, but yeah can’t wait to try out a new nexus first updates and all

        1. Look up the Ominia 7 its a WP7 in the UK region that has better hardware material than the HTC phones. Sadly and understandable the same use of hardware is not used on the flagship devices since Samsung loves to be the light and thin category.

          1. Supposedly Samsung had hired Chris bangle of BMW infamy to work on their
designs hopefully something good will crawl out

  2. I like the Nexus S 4G, got it about a week ago and I love it.

I do hope the next Nexus phone comes with LED notifications and atleast an SD card slot (even if there is an internal USB storage model). I am looking forward to what they roll out with next and I can bet that it will be on Sprint from now on (notice I said bet, I have no knowledge of this, just an educated guess :) )

PS: I am soooo happy you finally switched to DISQUS!!!! Thanks Phandroid team!!

  3. WELL THIS MEAN NEXUS 3 WILL BE FOR SPRINT OOH YEA SWITCHING

  4. Google/Sprint/Htc… What a great future ahead… And on a unrelated note to those who do not want the Evo 3d… KEEP IT MOVING WE DON’T NEED YOUR DESIRE FOR THIS HANDSET IT WILL SELL JUST FINE… THE EVO 3D WILL BE THE BEST DEVICE ON THE MARKET REGARDLESS OF ALL THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE MISSLEAD…. DAYS TO 3D LAUNCH…

  5. With this update, I am feeling
that iphone also will get itself NFC capable in future.

  6. Sprint….right to the unemployment line. Crying that they can’t compete with the big boys and false 4g standards. Have fun trying to find a buyer of your pinto network.

  7. Sprint and Google getting in bed together again…interesting.
