The countdown has begun. At 7PM Eastern we’ll be unveiling our list of Best Android Applications and simultaneously broadcasting a live podcast to discuss our choices. This is a list we’ll constantly keep up to date so it’s perfectly possible for existing “Best Apps” to be dethroned as time goes on.
Here are the categories we’ve selected:
- Android Enthusiasts
- Barcode/Shopping
- Camera
- Documents
- Excercise
- File Managers
- File Syncing/Sharing
- Flashlight
- Food/Recipe
- Messaging
- Movies
- Music Players
- Navigation/Maps
- News/RSS
- Note Taking
- Novelty
- Personal Finance
- Remote Access
- Sports Scores/News
- Streaming Music
- Tools
- Travel & Local Search
- Weather
Everyone has different preferences, needs, interests and opinions but we’ve heard overwhelmed Android users ask “What apps should I download?” way too many times. We hope that this list serves as a great starting point for Android owners of all levels. Not to mention, when your family and friends with new Android Phones inevitably turn tour expert tech opinion by asking what best apps are… now you can just link them to this extensive list rather than waste your breath explaining endlessly!
Tonight at 7PM you can listen to the podcast on Blogtalk Radio or just visit Phandroid.com and look for the podcast article. Our Best Android Apps page will go live when the podcast starts so don’t forget to check back!
In the meantime, what are your top choices for each category listed above?
Is there going to be a phone and tablet list or is it just going to be only one list.
It’ll just be one list. In the future, when dedicated tablet apps are more plentiful, a best tablets list would be a good idea. Nice suggestion.
Ok thanks Rob.
Great idea, looking forward to seeing who comes out on top in each category.
Did you get permission from Apple to use the word “Apps” in your titile? If not, I smell another lawsuit coming lmao.
I lol’d
You could probably do 1 podcast for each category listed here.
Tell me about it! We’ll zip through them rather quickly, but discussing apps will be a continued focus of our podcast and if you’re keen on reading/hearing more on a particular category, let us know.
You should have a chat open on Blogtalk and include links to the apps as you talk about them.
That page – http://androidapplications.com/best/ – will have a list with details, links, and all the information you’d likely want. Just gotta wait until 7pm :)
“Tools” seems like a large category. For example, is Launchers in the Tools category? It seems like Launchers and Lockscreens and apps like that could almost be their own category… in fact, Tools could probably be broken into several subcategories. But the one that popped out at me was Launchers…
Yeah. What happen to the Themes section, there are thousands of those?
One person likes kitty kats, another likes half naked women, another likes transformers and another likes tree hugging. This is why we avoided picking a best “Theme” – like “Games” it is very subjective. However, we’re not opposed to adding new categories so keep the ideas coming!
Sorry Rob, I meant what happened to the Theme section on the Android market not from your list.
We totally agree, John. Our tools category is a total patchwork of apps that do random and different things so it’s hard to compare them.
For now, it’ll be listed as one category but in the future we’ll likely update it to either add individual tool categories or somehow incorporate a solution for this challenge.
We’ve already got a lot of categories so we didn’t want to overwhelm people on the first time around. We’ll continue to update and improve the list over time so it will be a living/breathing document.
This is an excellent idea! cant wait :)
Will there be an option to get this info later for those of us unable to listen @ 7pm?
It will be permanently available at http://androidapplications.com/best/ so just visit that page any time after 7pm! And of course you can listen to the archived show.
Flashlight has its own category but not games?
We felt “Best Games” was too subjective and, if we were to create a best games list, would probably have different categories of games. But overall there are just WAY too many factors involved with selecting best games.
However… if enough people feel otherwise and really want to see this incorporated somehow, we’ll add it as an app category or maybe as a separate “Best Games” feature.
Makes sense, though anytime you label something “best”, it’s going to be subjective.
I do agree there would probably end up being way too many categories for games in addition to what you have already-still I hope it’s something you look into for future lists.
Please consider simplePLAY for the Music Player category. Simple design coupled with some great features, including album art downloading, theme support, quick jump letters in the lists and a “no look” playing interface that allows gestures anywhere on the screen. Safe and great for use while driving!
