Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Entertainment, and Communications conference, AT&T CFO John Stephens announced the launch of AT&T’s next-gen 4G LTE network for September 18th. AT&T will be bringing its first true 4G experiment to five markets — Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio — with a total of 15 switched on by the end of the year. The launch of the new network will breath new life into AT&T’s current lineup of LTE data sticks and hotspots, as well as their first LTE device, the HTC Jetstream tablet.

Why didn’t they plan ahead and add LTE to the Galaxy S2?
So they can sell a GS2 HTE version later.
snip* AT&T also said that its HSPA+ USB modem, the USBConnect Adrenaline from LG, could be upgraded to LTE starting Aug. 26 via a software update.*
So would that mean that eventually some of the newer phones could be upgraded through software alone?
nope
Needs to have the LTE radios inside.
That’s what I thought…. that snip made it sound like it wasn’t the case. I guess those devices came with the hardware…. just not turned on.
But, but, but… they don’t have T-Mobile yet. They can’t be implementing LTE, they’re too tightly restricted by spectrum. ;)
the ;) is SO critical.
thats my birthday. (yea i kno thats not relevant.)
Ditto here!
That’s mine too. Happy Birthday to all of us. I’m hoping for the GSII.
Happy Birthday Dood! Mine is the 23rd.
I’ll be interested to see how the actual speeds look. I’ve no doubt they can improve the device to tower speed, but what about the overall network improvements.
Awww, look at AT&T, a day late and a dollar short to Verizon just like always.
So cool!!! Alright! 15 markets by the end of the year. That’s almost as many as Verizon’s 175! AT&T rules!
Yay!! I live in Houston but I don’t have AT&T or an LTE capable phone. I hope Tmo doesn’t get sold. They’re 4G LTE is sure to be better.
Because AT&T are running with their tails between there legs trying to catch up to Big Red, they never will. They will be running on 1400 Which will be spotty and not cover a whole lot besides the immediate area. Its still going to be running off the same crappy, over bogged equipment so dont expect it to be as good as Verizon LTE.
