Well this is comforting to hear. Adobe hasn’t just been spending all their time attacking vulnerabilities within their products. They’ve been working behind the scenes for the next versions of Flash Player (11) and AIR (3). In their words, the updates will bring the “next generation of immersive apps across platforms including Android, iOS (via AIR), BlackBerry Tablet OS, Mac OS, Windows, connected TVs and other platforms.”
Adobe’s promising a lot with this update, and what they’re promising shows a whole lot of promise. We’re to expect 3D graphics (finally!), 1,000 times faster and smoother rendering thanks to hardware acceleration, 60FPS support and more (a lot of it is for developers, really).
Thanks to all of this, console-quality gaming is said to be possible on the web (interestingly enough, they don’t mention which console could be compared). Consider the full explanations below and see if you don’t get a tad excited:
- Accelerated 2D/3D Graphics: Full hardware-accelerated rendering for 2D and 3D graphics enable 1,000 times faster rendering performance over Flash Player 10 and AIR 2. Developers are able to animate millions of objects with smooth 60 frames per second rendering and deliver console-quality games on Mac OS, Windows and connected televisions. A pre-release brings these same accelerated 2D and 3D capabilities to mobile platforms including Android, Apple iOS and BlackBerry Tablet OS. - AIR Native Extensions: With support for thousands of highly-optimized, open-source libraries, developers are able to tap into unique software and hardware capabilities including access to device data, vibration control, magnetometers, light sensors, dual screens, near field communications (NFC) and more. Native extensions also allow developers to more deeply integrate AIR applications with other business software.
- Captive Runtime: Developers can automatically package AIR 3 with their applications to simplify the installation process on Android, Windows and Mac OS in addition to Apple iOS. Users no longer have to download and update AIR separately on any of these platforms, or BlackBerry Tablet OS, which includes AIR built in. In addition, with the captive runtime option developers can manage version updates to their application independent of general AIR updates by Adobe.
- Content Protection: Premium video content can now be protected using Adobe Flash Access® 3 across all supported platforms, including new support for mobile platforms.
- HD Video Quality Across Platforms: Full frame rate HD video can now be displayed within AIR applications on Apple iOS devices using H.264 hardware decoding. Rich applications on televisions are also able to deliver HD video with 7.1 channel surround sound.
- Rental and Subscriptions Support: With support for Adobe Flash Access and Adobe Pass, content publishers can take advantage of rental and subscription options for more flexible business models and offer TV Everywhere content to more than 80 percent of U.S. pay TV subscribers.
- Compatibility: 64-bit support on Linux, Mac OS and Windows ensures a seamless experience with the latest 64- bit browsers.
All of this is said to be here before the end of the year. It will be very interesting to see just how well Flash for Android will perform in everyday situations. While the current implementation (on decent phones) is quite good, there’s always room for improvement. Read on for full press details.

By the end of 2015, the number of devices that will support Adobe AIR is expected to increase to 1 billion.
Adobe AIR, a superset of Flash Player, enables developers to leverage existing code to create and deliver standalone applications across devices and platforms. Thousands of Flash based applications have already been created and made available on Android Market, iTunes App Store, Samsung SmartTV Store and BlackBerry AppWorld™ today.

Yeah right Adobe, I’ll believe it when I see it. I like having the option to use flash unlike those other guys but it makes my phone to laggy.

You are either very patient or very tolerant to claim that. Or maybe it’s svtplay.se that sucks when it comes to touch screen support. (Svtplay.se, a tv on demandsite, being pretty much the only flash site I visit.) I would expect touch screen support to be automatically there and good in flash for android. Let’s hope it’s better in flash 11.

i hate all these exagerated claims that our phones will be playing CONSOLE graphics….. i think its BS. sure the graphics should get better but don’t promise me PS3 graphics on my smartphone please, im not this dumb

Ps3 and xbox are 4 to 5 years old in hardware, i believe that visuals on mobile will catch up by next year and start to exceed it by 2013-14! Via tegra 4,5 and 6!
They’re promising “Console-quality games” on Windows. Last I checked, PC games surpasses gaming consoles on all fronts, so I have no idea what the hell they’re smoking (in which case, I’d like some of that!).
We have superior graphics on PC on legacy software yes, but what they’re claiming is that we’ll soon be able to play games in our web browsers with 3D graphics that rival consoles for quality. I’d expect around GCN graphics level.
They’re also claiming that outside the browser (via AIR). This is more of a case of a marketer choosing the wrong words, especially with “console-quality” being such a broad term.
Also, “console-quality” visuals in games inside a browser is nothing as new as they want it to sound like. Unity has been around for quite a while now.
If these claims are even slightly true, it will be a dream come true on the Galaxy S II. This thing already chews up 1080P embedded flash videos and spits them out without sweating.
