Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 production halted for switch to quad-core processor?

13

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 might not be the only tablet in the company’s lineup to see processor change in the coming months. According to new information obtained by NetbookNews, production of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has been halted as manufacturing switches gears to include a quad-core CPU. The chip is being referenced with the codename “Espresso.” It’s unclear if the chip has anything to do with the upcoming Exynos 4412 platform developed by the Korean mobile maker. Rumors also place the Exynos chip in the revamped Galaxy Note 10.1, which has reportedly been delayed until June to accommodate the switch.

The production stoppage could cause a delay in the release of the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 in the US, though at this point there is no confirmation of this being the case. We suspect Samsung plans to show off the faster speeds of the Galaxy Tab 2 and Galaxy Note 10.1 alongside the unveiling of the Galaxy S III during a press event to be held in London on May 3rd.

  1. A smart decision. But this probably means we won’t see the high-resolution tablet at least until mid-summer.

  2. I thought they were using a TI chip to keep costs down? Putting a brand new quad core Exynos doesn’t seem like it would keep costs down.

    1. Samsung is using its own chips, the price should stay relatively the same.

    2. Samsung is using in house chips for all of their phones and tablets now, the only exception is if they’re trying to manufacture and release they’re budget devices like the Tab 7 2.0 and “Galaxy Ace” type phones apparently because they don’t have in house chips at those price points to reduce costs. I think the Galaxy Tab 2.0 will be their iPad 2 competitor at 400$, while the Galaxy Note 10.1 will be their iPad 3 competitor fwiw.

      1. They use processors from TI, Qualcomm and nVidia as well as their own Exynos to satisfy modem/radio requirements for various carriers in the SGS2 series.

  3. I think its a good move but that’s what Samsung should of done in the first place.

  4. There you go boys!  Great decision.

  5. well this is good but i hope it still comes out may 14 like it was going to

  6. ICS need quad core?
Guess all that TW needs more power…
cuz my xoom runs ICS w/ no problems..

    1. battery savings is my guess

  7. Wasn’t the whole Tab 2 line supposed to be cost efficient like the Tab 7 2? How’re they gonna keep the price down if they switch to a quad core cpu?

    1. Because Sammy is moving from 45nm to 32nm process for their own AP, exynos and it saves them a lot of money.

      1. what exactly is an AP now?
And if Samsung could produce the Exynos for cheaper than they could buy another chip, why didn’t they push back the 7 inch version as well?
