We still can’t be sure exactly when Ice Cream Sandwich will officially arrive for the Motorola Droid Bionic, but if a newly leaked build is any indication the day of reckoning could be coming soon. Discovered by P3Droid, the latest ROM is built around Android 4.0.4 and so far is running pretty smoothly for those that have installed it. This is a good sign that may indicate Motorola and Verizon are nearing the end of development for the upgrade.
Even better, those wishing to get their feet wet won’t even need oodles of Android hacking knowledge to do so. The ROM can be installed directly via the phone’s microSD card using stock recovery. In order to do so, users must have their Bionic on the latest official version of its software, which would be the recent .905 update. Even though the installation process requires little tinkering, those wishing to take the plunge should still proceed with caution. Consider the software unfinished for now and expect to run into some bugs.
Has anyone given this a try yet? Just curious. I’ve done some checking and no word on if it can be FXZ’d back to stock.
From what I’ve seen it can’t be FXZ’d back to stock. If this wasn’t so risky, I’d do it myself. I can’t have an unreliable phone though. I need it for work.
WAH! Not worth it. I guess I will just have to wait! Thanks!
If it’s anything like the Droid 4 ICS leak, it’s definitely worth it. You won’t want to go back to GB.
I’ve played with ICS and I love it. I flashed a few ICS roms on my phone before, but they were too buggy so I went back to stock. I want to stay on the upgrade path if possible. I’d rather not muck up my phone if I can avoid it. This leak takes you off the upgrade path so once you go, you can’t go back.
I have to admit that I’m not to familiar with the Bionic, but if it’s close enough to the RAZR and Droid 4, then it is possible to get back on the upgrade path. A method has been created allowing both of those phones to flash newer ICS leaks over the old ones and should work the same way for the OTA update. My guess is that the same method can be used for the Bionic.
What is that method? just so i’m prepared when the time comes? Do you have a link to that info?
It involves flashing GB with fastboot, then flashing the ICS kernel from the update you want to finish on, and then flashing the ICS update. There are plenty of threads about it in the Droid 4 and RAZR forums at xda-developers and droidforums.net.
Thanks!
Kevin mentions ” stock recovery”. Does that refer to ” factory reset” ?
Nope. Very different. A recovery is what you use to flash a rom (among other things). Have you ever watched any other updates installed on your phone? When it’s installing, that’s the recovery.
Factory reset is wiping out any changes you made and putting the phone back to what you had when you bought it.
I heard this build clocks the processor to 1.2 GHz. If the video camera works and webtop, I might have to give this a go.
