With all of the great things we’ve been told about from the Atrix HD, there’s one black spot on an otherwise good apple: it won’t be coming with Lapdock support and the accompanying software, Webtop.
Motorola says they stripped these features out to keep costs down, and the likely cause of that decision is due to the operator who will be offering it: AT&T. The functionality in the phone itself costs almost nothing to implement, we imagine. It’s the Lapdock accessory that would incur most of the expenses for both parties involved.
We can’t imagine AT&T was happy with the sales of the original Lapdock. The device was grossly overpriced — you could buy a decent tablet or laptop for how much they were asking for. Moving it off the shelves must have been a pain and supply that heavily outweighs demand is an ugly issue for any company.
While we’ve seen Lapdocks for other devices considerably cheaper since then, AT&T probably just doesn’t want to be bothered. In any case, if you’re a bit vexed by this news there’s always the option of not buying it. Or you could just use the money you were going to spend on it to buy a very nice 7 inch tablet. i thought at &t also required tethering plan last time too, because everyone knows gbs get more expensive on a bigger screen
Its a mobile device anyway
So why use the atrix name! It should be called something else. Then spend all the money on atrix! Fail!
Just like the RAZR, with that ugly hunchback. Instead, they could have made the whole phone the same thickness as that thick part, and had a massive 5,000mAh battery! Do we consumers really care for a super thin phone? I know i don’t
good. lapdock is useless
Way to go at&t, another punt on 1st & 10. Where do you find your product development & marketing decision makers, from the rejected applicants to a** clown college?
The least you could have done is install WEBTOP for use on the LAPDOCKS & HD DOCKS/STATIONS that are already available.
Sales of the original lapdock couldnt have been a reason to remove the lapdock functionality, Motorola could’ve just opted to sell it themselves like they’ve been doing, or through 3rd party retailers.
It was a terrible implementation and not necessary. If anything just ape Asus implementation now that ICS supports multiple screen layouts by size.
Or maybe AT&T learned that adding tethering to a device that is neither separate nor more powerful was a stupid decision. But I doubt AT&T would learn from their mistakes.
Can this thing be hacked to enable a lapdock?
