A few folks exchanging their recently purchased Samsung Galaxy S3 at Verizon in exchange for a new model have found a new software version installed on the device. Tagged as version VRLG1, the updated software brings about a revised kernel. What users will notice most, however, is the implementation of internet-only search, or what has been commonly referred to as the “dumbed-down” search that Samsung and Google have been forced to turn to after a recent ban of certain Galaxy products in the United States.
Apple’s iOS patent for querying device-based results such as contacts has forced Samsung to remove the functionality from devices such as the Galaxy Nexus and other carrier-branded Galaxy S3 models. Right now, it appears the new VRLG1 software that strips this functionality is only showing up on new GS3 handsets direct from Verizon, but an OTA update to all handsets may be in the works. There is no indication of when that will occur at this time.

so frustrating that an idea like that can be patented. It’s like patenting the idea of building in a hard drive in a vehicle radio. it’s natural progression but others aren’t allowed to do it because Apple did it first. that shouldn’t be allowed.
Most of the time Apple doesn’t do it first, they just get the patent for it.
Which demonstrates not only that Apple is nothing more than the douche bag in the office who can’t come up with his/her own ideas, but also that the U.S.patent system is a bumbling idiocracy.
I’m pretty sure the example you gave is indeed a patented idea. But whoever holds that patent is probably a lot more happy to license it out than Apple is with their patents.
FWIW, as long as you’re rooted you can easily restore the old /system/app/GoogleSearchQuickBox.apk (from a backup, xda, or gapps) to retain local search functionality.

Why this was not thrown out is beyond my comprehension.Comprehensive search has been used on every device I have. I absolutely hate Apple they just flat out suck.
