Canadian users were about to pick up their torches and pitchforks after hearing TELUS had canceled the Android 4.0 update to the HTC Desire HD. Of course, we would be upset too. Especially after the carrier announced the device would be one of the few to get Ice Cream Sandwich. Well guys, it turns out we might have to go riot somewhere else – HTC’s headquarters.
HTC is now claiming the device is best sticking with Android 2.3. This is, of course, after “extensive testing.”
“After extensive testing, HTC has determined that the current version of HTC Sense with Android provides customers with the best experience on the HTC Desire HD. When we consider new versions of software, we weigh a number of factors, but ultimately the customer experience on the product is the deciding factor. We apologize for any confusion this change may have caused our customers.”
As Raveesh mentioned before, there is an abundance of devices with lower specs that will be getting the creamy update. Not to mention the fact that the same device has a growing list of custom ROMs running Android 4.0 and above. HTC Desire HD users will have to depend on those to get the latest updates from now on, so it is rooting time!
Here’s a petition to get HTC to continue development or at least release the source code they have so far (to get camera etc. working properly – now it’s hacked together): http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/give-us-ics/
Sorry about replying but this was the only way I could comment as disqus just isnt working correctly and its not letting my use the leave a message box at the top of the comments section.
Even my weak Samsung Galaxy Prevail which is a single core with 384mb of ram has a working ICS build so if my weak phone can handle ICS I know something like the HTC Desire HD can as well.
Hey HTC here is an idea
How about you stop bloating up the Android OS by not adding Sense. Then the ICS update will run perfect on this handset.
Just an idea that maybe you should start giving customers what they want before you end up like RIM.
I like their phones but I can never bring myself to buy one. lol
I have to admit, Sense is the reason.
In my opinion, from personal experience dealing with Rogers and HTC during the Magic and Dream fiasco, this very likely isn’t about “customer experience” and is likely more about whether or not they want to spend the money to create the update for the select number of customers with the device on that carrier.
The only reason we got an update to 2.1 for the Magic was because we put pressure on Rogers, who put pressure on HTC. As for the Dream, they simply said there was no way it was going to happen. They wouldn’t admit it, but there was a lot of double speak (I have emails from HTC management) that, in my opinion, basically meant that we weren’t a big enough install base to be worth their time and/or money.
OEM UIs are the bane of Android. I now have a Nexus S, and I will NEVER EVER get an Android phone that isn’t a Nexus device, or which can’t easily be rooted.
I’m running a JellyBean port right now, too bad HTC is hiding behind sense bloat.
Reminds me of what samsung did with touchwiz and one of their phones where they said toouchwiz was far to heavy on ICS for the phone.
Reasons why to stay away from a HTC device, sense just sucks and they know it.
This is awesome. I have a mate with a Desire HD and another with a Razer both on Gingerbread.Neither have been prepared to unlock their boot loader so far. The joke is that we were wondering who would be first on ICS. Looks like the Razer friend doesn’t have to worry about being outdone anymore. Maybe DHD mate will finally let me flash him a ROM.
