AT&T has really enjoyed the benefits of this smartphone boom that has come over the industry in the past half decade. With Android continuing its meteoric rise and iOS still giving AT&T good business despite their loss of exclusive rights, the company couldn’t be more happy to learn that its Q4 performance broke smartphone sales records wide open.
AT&T sold 10 million smartphones in Q4 2012. While that isn’t a very wide margin compared to the 9.4 million smartphones in the same quarter a year ago, a broken record is a broken record. CEO Ralph de la Vega says “customers flocked to our leading portfolio of the latest Android, Apple, and Windows devices,” though he only attributed success to Android and iOS in a different breath.
We’re not sure how much of those sales Android phones were responsible for, but we’re almost positive it didn’t stink up the joint. We’ll have to wait for AT&T to post its full results to see if the carrier will let us in on the full numbers.
Been nothing but happy with my AT&T service and support. Dunno why they get so much crap. Glad they’re successful.
Price, asterisks on unlimited data. Your experiences are yours.
agl82, I have to agree with you. I’ve been an att customer since 05 I believe and have never had an issue.
Is it just me, but a 6% year over year growth for smart phone industry is not that great.
I work as a sales rep for att out here in Colorado and I’ll tell ya, since the launch of the iflop 5 I’ve had more people walk in willing to switch to android all together. During black Friday weekend the GS3 alone was was the #1 seller over ios. Keep in mind that I work for a privately owned retailer not corporate owned so I can’t speak about att as a whole. But it was still pretty crazy to see that number
I’m pretty sure Apple outsold all of Android during the holiday quarter. This is typical though.
Yeah I’m pretty sure too. But I was just talking about the black Friday weekend for the company I worked for. It was pretty refreshing to see that the gs3 had topped the iphone that weekend.
Never had a problem with AT&T keep it up in 2013.
AT&T LTE was so beautiful back in May when i got my One X.
…then the SGS3 and iPhone 5 came out and their LTE turned into the royal suck fest that was their HSPA+. Sporting events, concerts, Disneyland, and even the mall on busy days. I’ll have full bars of LTE but can’t get an ounce of data.
att is terrible in metro ny area
t mobile is the way to go here
How bout at&t update my One X to jellybean. ASAP!
since apple users aren’t parading around talking about how many iphone5s have been sold and have broken X record, it’s safe to say Android made up a larger portion of that revenue.
Why is that safe to say. Apple generally pulls 70+% of smartphone sales on AT&T. Why would that change? The iPhone 5 is selling better than any previous iPhone model. I’m sure both android and apple increased their volume but the percentages will probably be the same.
i’m surprised they didn’t get a significant bump since everybody was crazy over the Galaxy S III, HTC One X, One X+ compared to their 2011 flagship devices. or is this because at&t is an iPhone country and iPhone 5 failed to deliver?
Haha nice try. At least 4:1 is the ratio of iPhones to the rest activated on AT&T this quarter. Although they did not disclosed numbers per platform but they said the total smartphone activations were around 10m and both iPhone and android grew from last the last year. And last years iPhone activations were 7.6m so one need no brains to deduce the allocations. Btw Verizon just reported that iPhones business is more than 50% despite how hard the agents are trying to push you into droids
“Android, Apple, and Windows”
Android is an Operating System, Apple is a company and Windows is a software suite…
It should be: Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7/8 or Google, Apple and Microsoft.
It should be whatever they want it to be.
