Hands-on: Huawei Ascend D2 [VIDEO]
The Huawei Ascend Mate and Ascend D2 were just announced at CES 2013; we’ve had the opportunity to go hands-on with the Ascend Mate 2 and now it’s time to see what the D2’s got in store for consumers.
Huawei is billing the Ascend D2 as the most powerful smartphone on the market and it’s hard to argue the device wouldn’t grace the top level of such a list. The D2 has a 5-inch screen and 1080p display yet is surprisingly thin, pocketable, and definitely attractive.
In addition to the gorgeous screen you’ve got one of the most spec’d out cameras on a mobile, bringing a 13MP camera to the mix. Swiping directly from picture-taking mode into your gallery is a very nice touch and we wouldn’t be surprised to see other OEMs integrate this feature into their software.
The camera also includes some nice photo customization and editing tools we’ve seen on Huawei’s past which are always fun to toy with. For example, check out Kevin’s fish-eye looking photo of Edgar below:
The D2 runs Android 4.1 Jellybean with the company’s proprietary Emotion UI 1.5 atop. One interesting feature of the UI is hideable primary navigation keys; you can see they cause us slight problems while trying to exit the camera, but for the most part the UI is smooth and enjoyable. You can thank the quad-core 1.5GHz processor for the quick experience.
Huawei has definitely created a powerful device, but the more powerful the phone the more battery you’ll burn, so Huawei has equipped the Ascend D2 with a huge 3000mAh battery that should settle your tech obsessed nerves. Somehow Huawei encapsulates this all in a stunningly thin and sleek package that will make the Ascend D2 the object of many gadgeteers affections later this year.
