Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 specs leaked

34

Last week, we heard about a new 5.8 inch device Samsung would be bringing called the Samsung Galaxy Mega. The device will feature a very odd set of specs, apparently, as SamMobile seems to believe the following list is accurate. It’ll come with a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, a 5.8-inch qHD display, an 8 megapixel camera on the rear and a 2 megapixel camera on the front. It’s teetering the line of mid-range and high-end quite spectacularly, though such a low-resolution display doesn’t do much to help us nudge it over to the greener pastures of high-end.

As you would expect from any Samsung phone these days, it will launch with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (upgradeable to Android 4.2 over time) and will come with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface. We’re not sure what to expect from the 6.3-inch variant that was leaked alongside this one last week, but we’ll have our eyes peeled for that information in the days and weeks to come.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. 4.3-4.5in phones for me!!!

    1. lol there aren’t any of those anymore. not since 2011 at least…

  2. Why? Lol

  3. 5.5 is my limit, I just can’t go for a bigger screen, unless it’s the size of Note II w/ smaller bezel..

    1. That’s what I’m hoping for the G-Note 3…if they make the display bigger I’m hoping for the overall size of the device not to increase. Just like they did with the GS4 a slightly bigger display but it’s about the same size as the GS3…

  4. Oh my gosh!! That user wasn’t kidding when they said Samsung is going to come out with a device in every inch. =.S

    1. Nothing in the 9-inch bucket yet, but they’ve got 3 through 10 covered :)

  5. It’s also rumored to be 960×540 resolution… If this is correct, wtf are you doing Samsung?

    1. That’s what qHD means. Also, I agree it seems a little odd.

      1. Right… But qHD on a 5.8 inch screen? Not gonna win anyone over with that…

        1. It’s like installing windows and having it default to 800 x 600 on a 42″ screen. Had that happen the other day. It’s hideous.

          1. @DavidVarghese:disqus @Killa357:disqus I mean, the Galaxy Player was 5-inches (huge in its time) and only had 800×480.

          2. So this Grand is essentially a poor man’s Note, sans stylus.

          3. But that was back then when that resolution seem to be great….But now almost everyone is making 720p and 1080p displays….. Heck even smaller OEMs are making budget friendly phones with 720p displays.

          4. True, I guess it just feels odd now that we have begun pushing higher resolutions.

          5. Windows doens’t have good PPI scaling Android does, besides that, you are comparing a 23.81 PPI screen with a 189.91 PPI screen :P

How is that ‘like’ each other?

If you want to have a big screen but don’t have the money for the Note you could/should buy this device, it’s just that simpel :)

          6. You really don’t get the meaning of the word like, do you? Nothing there was meant to be taken as an exact measurement, it was simply a loose comparison. By ‘like’ I mean that it is pushing a resolution that is below the average for that size screen. I thought that simile was self evident. I guess not. Anyway, it looks like it will be a budget device. I assume this will be an LCD, if it is then it will be cheaper to make than an AMOLED device.

        2. If the price is right there will be some takers…Not everyone is willing to pay top dollars for the best and greatest device out there….

  6. 3 words…. Ew

  7. Why doesnt Samsung just begin to sell its mobile devices by size instead of giving them ugly ugly names. I envision walking up to the counter and asking for four inches of the galaxy phone, I mean in all seriousness its basically the same crap in different screen sizes. Same boring plastic look, same skittle based, tacky crowded, android skin.

    1. Well, i love my note 2 and I couldn’t go any smaller anymore. I love the stylus. Just used it to edit a picture of my house to do my landscaping. It was great! Like someone said, if they keep the size the same on note 3 with bigger screen,i’ll buy it again. But as for same boring plastic look, maybe but all i know is I love the way my note 2 looks. If only it had an actual metal bezel around it to protect it

  8. horrible

  9. Phone screens are like boobs. To big, and then they just get ugly.

    1. And floppy

      1. O_o

    2. thats a great comparison.

  10. not high res, dated specs i dont understand the point of this

    1. Its called marketing.
The Chinese are coming (ZTE, Huawei et all) whose value mid range handsets will begin to eat into the market up in between 12-18 months from now so Samsung are getting their punches in now before they end up like HTC, Motorola et all. Also in growing developing markets people need these kinds of functional handsets without the latest NFR wallet 4g LTE that westerners get excited about.

      1. +1

        One word: DUOS

Anyone who understands what DUOS means, understands what markets this is intended for. Those of us in “The West” will never see this thing.

      2. did you saw this one

        http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/09/xiaomi-phone-2s-2a-miui-v5/

hi end good quality phones at decent price

  11. No quad but my kinda screen the eye’s are gettin bad.luv.my s3 fast baby fast!

  12. 5.8 with QHD? It’s gonna look like crap to anyone with a modern smart friend in their other pocket or the cube next to them.

  13. qhd on 5.8 inches? that’ll be the ugliest thing in the universe. this better literally be cheaper than manure to be worth buying.

  14. How clever Samsung are… HTC did this (4.7″ screen 480×800) back in 2011 with the HTC Sensation XL.
    HTC peaked too soon.
