“Goodbye Moto” — is Motorola’s new identity with the Moto X being unveiled August 1st?

32

By now, I’m sure we all know the Moto X is real — Motorola itself admitted that much. The only problem is we still haven’t gotten a look at the device or any confirmed information about what it will bring to the table. What we do know is that Motorola Mobility is looking to change its image up under the direction of parent company Google, and it will do that with the first device Motorola has made with the Mountain View company’s influence.

So when can we expect it? Well, new rumors are suggesting the previous “August” window was accurate. An ad portfolio for a marketing designer — Blake Bäkken — showcases several pieces of material for a campaign that could be tipping us off to the Moto X Phone’s ad campaign.

We can’t be sure if Motorola invited this designer to submit samples for consideration to include him on a new ad campaign or if he did it out of sheer interest. We’re leaning toward the latter — we’d hope Motorola is secretive enough to ask would-be contractors to keep these things private under NDA — but anything is possible.

The designer has a host of images saying “Goodbye Moto,” communicating that the “old” Motorola is dying for a new, hip, energetic, and exciting Motorola. Pieces of mock-up billboard artwork show an August 1st date for the culmination of the “Goodbye” portion of the campaign (though a couple of the other images show June 11th, as well). We’re not sure if that exact date has substance, but it could be one to circle on our calendars to revisit when that time comes.

That same designer also has images for Motorola’s “return,” with images depicting the text “Hello Again” with a more colorful, vibrant and hip vibe. If true, we imagine that leg of the campaign will begin on whatever that aforementioned date really is.

Some of the messages include messages like “What could change? How about everything,” and “A word to the billion people the world has never heard from before: Hello,” ultimately promising us that “nothing won’t change” in Motorola’s new push for the top of the smartphone mountain.

It’s worthy to note that some of the images depict a Motorola phone, though we can’t be too sure if this is an actual Moto X or just a generic render. The phone doesn’t show anything exciting or extraordinary either way, so take it for what you will.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

    1. HTC already used that name on one of their devices… -_-

      1. He means for the phone to amaze him

        1. Why would he want the phone to turn him into a competitor’s phone?

  2. There are a bunch of haters out who just want to see Motorola die. Me, I’m excited to see what they are going to bring to the table. I can hardly wait for the x phone. It may not have the best specs, but it will be a good device for those who can’t afford the One or an S4

I always thought the Razr MAX and
MAXX HD would have captured significant marketshare if it was available
across carriers and they marketed it to a broad consumer based. The
“Droid” brand targets males 18-34yo too much, though that didn’t stop my

    1. Please no Bronies on this site…Please^^^^

  3. I really hope they reinvent themselves and come out stronger. My first V55x was a great phone I kept for years. My first experience of Android was a OG Droid. But then came the Droid X which was great at first. Then it got left behind in a second, and I got left with a device I couldn’t even put a ROM on to refresh it without half a days work and a few new gray hairs. I recently got a new phone and while I would of liked to go with a Moto device, after watching them for the last few years I had to jump to Samsung and get a Galaxy S3.

I’m still convinced that Motorola makes the best, most solid phones around but they so often drop the ball it’s not funny anymore. Here’s hoping they shape up so I can proudly buy another Motorola.

  4. I too am happy to see Moto making a return. Their radios and physical build quality have always been above par (looking at you Samsung). The radio is my GNex is awful, so it’d be nice to see Moto come out with something I’d consider buying

    1. I switched from a Bionic (on Verizon, obviously) to a GSM Galaxy Nexus on Straight Talk last year. Once the novelty of a stock Android experience wore off, I really missed Motorola’s better hardware – particularly the sturdy feel, screen brightness, and speakerphone and general audio volume. If the Moto X is available in an unlocked GSM version (stock Android or not), I’ll be eyeing it up as a replacement for my Nexus.

    2. I don’t understand all the Motorola hate? What makes most people dislike them, I mean they do have some bad phones, but so do most manufacturers, Samsung has their budget smartphones, Nokia as well. But really, Moto’s premium phones are awesome in my opinion. Namely the Droid 4, Droid RAZR, RAZR MAXX, etc. Their build quality is great. I too have a GNex, I like the feel of it, it isn’t horrible, but there is definitely room for improvement. There aren’t many phones at the moment that I can consider, being on Verizon. Don’t really want the GS4. But my upgrade isn’t for another year, so maybe by then we’ll get a good HTC phone, a One, or One successor. Or hey, maybe the Moto X?

      1. I’ve always loved moto my first cellphone was a moto v120 first smartphone was a moto q and first android was a cliq xt the problem was the android devices from moto in the beginning sucked and you could forget about updates. when they got their s#!t back together all they were releasing was verizon exclusives some nice devices but not everyone wants to bend over for verizon to f*%# them in their a$$.

  5. “A word to the billion people the world has never heard from before: Hello,”

This implies a lowcost phone for emerging markets. Smart.

  6. Having improved my phone call ability going from S3 to Razr Maxx, I’m a Moto fan. Now that the Google umbrella is covering them. I’m in

  7. The X might be my neXt. <– Hey, there's some free marketing for you, Moto.

And a word to Blake…. "Nothing Won't Change" might be the worst marketing slogan I've ever read. I get it. But most people won't. I really hope Moto doesn't use that.

    1. FWIW, the semi-awkward working makes people stop and think about its implications. The phrase “everything changes” is cliche and could cause people to glaze over the ad.

  8. Motorola should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell. Atrix ICS, right, right? F U!

  9. Give it stock android/amazing build quality that rivals the HTC One and you got a winner. If Motorola can’t do both, it’s truly good bye moto.

    1. Does HTC One provide you with stock android?
Truly, all of you talking about that for Motorola, have never tried the latest Moto phones alongside with a stock phone. It’s nearly identical, and much closer to stock than HTC has ever been (G1 aside).

      1. uhh, G2, first mytouch, and oh yea the NEXUS ONE, and now again back to stock with the Google edition of the One.

      2. Starting tommorow, yes.

I also hear that CyanogenMod on the HTC One is also pretty stable.

  10. I always thought the Razr MAX and MAXX HD would have captured significant marketshare if it was available across carriers and they marketed it to a broad consumer based. The “Droid” brand targets males 18-34yo too much, though that didn’t stop my sister.

  11. The X might be Moto’s last chance to stay in the game, so I hope they don’t screw it up because they do make quality devices. Once they make the X they need to ensure they follow up with prompt updates as well. Hopefully this won’t be a problem with Google’s backing.

    1. Death is becoming like everyone else.

  12. I have a motorola phone I’m waiting for the new one to drop. This one in August is not the big one that one is going to be in the fall winter.
They invented the cell phone practically and they have the best reception case closed I don’t care what Samsung can do!

  13. Its not a render its the actual handset for those wondering.

    1. If you mean the actual Razr HD running ICS, then yes.

  14. My god, can’t we have a phone company produce sleek, professional-looking, classy phones? Does everything have to be candy-colored and bubbly?

  15. Hopefully “goodbye MOTO” means they will never call anything MOTOanything ever again, including the X phone. Calling it MOTO-X would be a disgrace. Ive always disliked the MOTO branding.
