Is this LG phone sitting at the FCC the next Nexus phone?

LG Nexus 5 FCC

With mounting evidence that LG will be the ones to create the next Nexus phone, and with the device already said to be in the hands of the FCC, you had to expect that more would be on the way. A possible shot of the handset has been spotted in new photos from the airwave-regulating folks. This pictures comes with a request for a modification in radios for Verizon’s version of the LG G2, though we know that’s definitely not an LG G2.

So what’s going on here? Well, there are two things that could be true:

  1. This is a Nexus 5, and LG paid someone at the FCC a lot of money to list it as an LG G2, or…
  2. This is an LG G2 disguised in a generic chassis, and LG really did need to submit a last minute change to Verizon’s variant of the device.
  3. Someone just plain screwed up.

That last one is a lot more likely, as any changes that were made to the LG G2 are likely already done as Verizon’s version of the device is available as of this morning. There’s no telling what the truth really is, but we’re getting awfully close to the fall months, which is when Google tends to unleash the latest Nexus handset.

Let’s imagine if this actually were a Nexus device, though — what can we take from these photos? Well, for starters, you might notice a slit at the top of it. While we’d love for that thing to be an ultra cool fingerprint scanner or some sort of pico projector, it’s more likely that this is just a point of entry for the FCC folks to gain easy access to the device’s internals.

Other than that, the device looks pretty standard. There’s a camera on the front and back. The buttons for power and volume sit on the side (as opposed to the back, ala the G2), and it has a nice big display. It’ll take a bit more digging to see if this really is the Nexus phone we’re all waiting for Google and LG to bless us with later this year.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Battery is a big issue with android phones, cross your fingers android kit kat fixes that

    1. Yep, I would rather have a thicker phone with a longer lasting battery.

      1. Hate to say it but Apple’s 7.6mm iPhone (at the thickest, not at the thinnest like Android companies measure) proves that having a thicker/heavier phone is not the best solution.

        1. iphones dont have longer lasting batteries than razr maxx/note

        2. because what Apple builds is always “right” for everyone, eh?

        3. I’m not saying double the width of the phone, just add 0.3 mm and give it a 30% boost.

        4. Apple has 4″ screen. Can’t really compare

    2. Moto X and Droid Maxx both have better than 24 hours of battery life. More than double the best estimates for even the iPhone 5C or 5S. Android doesn’t have issues with battery life. Manufacturers have issues with battery life. It seems that the new X8 technology along with screens made for optimal resolution (not sure why anyone NEEDS a 1080p 700ppi on a tiny screen) solves this problem. Couple those features with active notification and you get the type of battery life every ROM and Developer tries to get.

      1. Exactly! People need to stop demanding over 330ppi phones. The max we will need on this one is about 1430 x 794, since it is probably has an 18:10 ratio.

  2. Quentyn got in a hurry to post this article. Started without a title, now it has one. Not exactly the same as my comment appears on the other article. I’ll share it here too:

@evleaks over on twitter posted a front & rear view (same rear as pictured above) and said it’s “Full-size Nexus 5.”

    https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/378186072586338305

    1. Sweet. Updated the post with the new image. Thanks! :)

  3. FCC link returns an error. Should be: https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=199417&fcc_id=ZNFVS980

Photos in question are the 4th link down, the external photos. Shows a filing date of 8-13-13, same as all the other G2 filings. So no, it doesn’t seem as a “last minute change” to the VZW variant, unless I’m missing something.

Also, D820 was submitted to the FCC on 8-8-13. https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=395625&fcc_id=ZNFD820

    1. Nice find, Demi. Your last name isn’t Moore, is it?

      1. Busted! I’ve been out of work, and Kutcher has been busy lately, so I get to troll my Android sites and try to post anonymously. Time to find a new name :/

      2. I was thinking god…

        1. Actually, that’s exactly what it’s a play off of. Demiurgous, shorted to Demiurge, and now just Demi.

      3. No, it’s Demi Trius

    2. Thanks for the link, but with the trillions of dollars our government wastes you’d think they would buy the FCC a square, rather than just borrowing 2 rulers from an elementary school.

      1. The person behind the camera obviously has no idea what they’re doing. At least they didn’t use two pencils!! Interns at their finest…

  4. Why in the world would it be a last minute change to the G2 for Verizon when people already made unboxing videos and shown off the phone with their logo and brand on it. Do you know how far that would push a phone back and have to resign it. Move the camera and sensors around. They wouldn’t change their buttons they claim to be innovative and what not for one carrier. That’s silly.

    1. Sometimes, companies request that the FCC keep documents about filings confidential for a certain amount of days, so it’s not at all farfetched to suggest this stuff could have been submitted and acted on well in advance of its appearance in the public FCC archives. That said, it doesn’t look like that is what happened here.

      1. Hit up any of the FCC links. None show recent filing dates, only recent published dates. I do think this was posted wrong by the FCC, but nothing suggests last minute change….just later publishing.

        1. Indeed, that’s why I said it doesn’t look like that is what happened.

  5. Just the fact that the words “Verizon” and “Nexus” are printed in the same article make me glad I haven’t preordered the Note 3 yet. But, I’m not getting my hopes up for this or any other Nexus phone ever coming to Verizon.

    1. I wouldn’t buy a Nexus phone on Verizon ever again. I would rather buy it unlocked from the play store and connect it to Verizon so that way I can still get updates from google.

      1. A Nexus phone on Verizon could possibly happen again. An unlocked Nexus phone in the Play Store that works on Verizon will never happen.

        1. I know it wont happen, but whats the point of a Nexus on Verizon if your going to rely on ported versions of Android, defeats the whole purpose of a Nexus device.

          1. You’re preaching to the choir. Verizon’s treatment of GNex updates is one of the reasons I’m leaving Verizon as soon as my contract is up.

      2. If Verizon ever allowed that that’s the way I would go as well, but currently the play store doesn’t offer any phones compatible with Verizon’s network.

        1. Im holding out till Verizon does allow it >.> vote with my wallet.

          1. Last time Verizon had a Nexus device I voted with my wallet, but it appears that election was lost.

  6. LG Nexus 5: My body is ready.

    1. My body and wallet are ready as well lol

    2. Why is your body ready? What are you intending to do with that phone??

  7. Wait, people actually want a fingerprint scanner? Why…? All I want is a giant battery and a slightly less grainy camera

    1. To easily unlock your device? I’ve avoided pin/pattern/face unlock simply because it was too much trouble. Fingerprint scanner is semi-secure, and super convenient.

      1. I love Trusted Devices on the new Motorola phones. It’s one of my favorite features.

      2. But if your phone is lost or stolen, and the battery dies, wouldn’t a factory reset delete everything once it’s plugged back in and has a charge? IJS

      3. I don’t use any type of security on my device, never found the need, if my phone ever does get lost or stolen, I can just remotely brick it (kill switch)

        1. You obviously never had a psycho gf… O_o

          1. Never have, I have a spidey sense when it comes to crazy chicks.

          2. That is why face unlock is a god send.

    2. Simple reason is because the iPhone has one. Personally I don’t care for it. There are also too many limitations like how it doesn’t work if your fingers are sweaty or if the phone has been reset. So iPhone 5S users will still have to put in a manual password sometimes.

      1. sometimes > always

        1. No, it’s more annoying to expect something to work, try and then it doesn’t work

  8. Well if this is true, there goes my hope of a metal back. This looks like the same plastic as the Nexus 7. It almost looks like the plastic sides of the Nexus 4.

The big camera sensor gives me hope that we will get a better camera this time.

    1. i dont care what it is as long as it isnt glass… i hate cases

  9. I kind of want to replace my S4 with this.

  10. I don’t really care if this is the real nexus or not the fact is that whatever it ends up looking like it’ll be my next phone! HTC One it’s been real!

    1. haha, i’m in the same boat, N5 please don’t disappoint us!

  11. Lower part of the bezel angers me :< … but over all not a bad looking device.

    1. The screen will probably be 7.63 mm taller than the N4, since I don’t think increased the width of the screen as they decreased the width of the body and I thin they’d leave the same screen width, and by my calculations I’m expecting it will have a screen ratio of 18:10, so between the 2mm the height of the body loses and this we are quite a bit less bezel than last time:-)

  12. After looking at the pictures closely I noticed a few more things:

    1. In the picture of the front it almost looks like they moved the camera so it’s centered above the screen. If you look at the full size picture you can see a blurry circle in that spot. This would make Skype and other apps that use the front camera more useful.

    2. The phone has ditched the silver edges of the Nexus 4. Even the power and volume rocker are matte black. While this does take away from the “premium” look that the Nexus 4 had, it gives the Nexus 5 a cool almost stealthy look that not too many phones have now days.

    3. In the side shots, you can see that this phone is quite a bit slimmer than the Nexus 4.

Overall, the more I see of this phone, the more I want it. Any guesses on when this thing will be announced? I’m thinking (hoping) that Google has an event in mid-late October, with a launch in November.

I also hope that Google drops the 8gb option and gives us a 16gb for $300 and a 32gb for $350.

    1. Would they allow an SD card on it as well? That would be a big selling point as I keep all my photos on an SD card for easy transfer. I definitely agree with the dropping of the 8gb option, either way I like my S4 but hate the fact that I have to wait for updates. I would gladly shell out $300 for this.

      1. No SD card would be my bet. Google hasn’t been using it since the birth of 4.0

        1. Since the nexus S actually, so three years and running.

          1. another nail in the SD slot coffin!

          2. Unfortunately looks that way, unless we go to the people that are often slow to update, but there is hope with GPE phones if you desire quick updates.

          3. Another reason why Samsung continues to dominate

    2. I’m hoping we can get a Sprint variant for around those prices off contract. Would make me very happy.

      1. This one, the D820, is probably set for Tmo, ATT, and Sprint, all in one, as it supports all three in one, including their LTE. This is a beast! I think the middle blur is actually the proximity sensor, no flash.

      2. ditto

    3. it does look like the camera is in the middle, makes me wonder if the circle on the left is a front facing flash?? I’ve been saying they should have this for a while now since everyone loves to take selfies these days

      1. the middle could be the notification light. Still seems to me that the camera is to the left

        1. Could be, but would be weird if they moved the light from the bottom of the phone to the top like that

          1. I agree!

  13. Zooming in on the label, you can see that it reads either LG-D820 (like the other alleged Nexus 5 that already went through the FCC) or LG-D822. Tough to make out….

    1. It reads LG-D820

    2. I see LG-D820, the zero being a zero with a slash through it.

      1. Was hoping that’s what I saw too :)

        1. Make a Note 3 vid when you can. I’m a fan.

  14. Speaker phone?

    1. If you’re wondering where the speakers are, I believe the single speaker is located on the back bottom right, opposite corner to the camera, based on what looked like mesh in the previous D820 FCC pictures. I can’t imagine any phone not having speakerphone these days, if that is what you’re wondering.

  15. Is it true that last year Google penned LG in for making 2 Nexus phones?

Im seriously considering skipping this generation of phones and hoping for an HTC Nexus. My spidey senses are tingling and I can feel it.

    1. Try two years time and I seriously doubt it will be an HTC – the Nexus is always cheap.

  16. I hope the “chin” being larger than the “forehead” is some kind of optical illusion.

    1. I think it is glare since my calculations show that the top bottom bezel should be 9.6mm less.

  17. The black space at the top of the back is an IR blaster! Well that’s my guess.

    1. I wouldn’t mind that at all.

  18. If pure vanilla Android got a decent video player and a File App I might want a Nexus phone. Until then, the 2013 Nexus 7 will do.

    1. wow, never tried google play huh?

      1. Whats Google Play?

        1. The android app store – where you can get no shortage of video players and file explorers and use them as the default if you wish

          1. Oh thanks. I just got my Nexus 7 and I only have Apple.

          2. ah, I see. plenty of beginners guides out there

try MX player for videos, and solid explorer for files.

Solid explorer is a paid app, but IMO the best – for good free ones try ES file explorer or Astro.

        2. troll

  19. Looks ugly if it is…

  20. HTC for the next NEXUS please ! LG makes great refrigerators and washers and dryers, just dont like their electronics too much.

  21. Can we get a price? if it’s going to be a ripoff like the MOTO X i’ll take it off of my wait list right now
