When Samsung revealed the Galaxy Gear smart watch September 4th, we were a bit vexed. It wasn’t quite what we were expecting in a couple of different areas, including design, compatibility (it will only work with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014 Edition to start, and will work with older Samsung flagship products after a software update), and an unattractive $300 price tag.
Thankfully, it looks like Samsung is already hard at work on a sequel that should be more all-around pleasing. That’s not that surprising considering Samsung had already revealed that the Galaxy Gear line wouldn’t be a one-stop affair. What is surprising is that Samsung apparently considered the first Galaxy Gear as a test run of sorts, with its main purpose being to gauge consumer demand.
The sequel is expected to be more diverse, with Samsung said to be working on bringing functionality for more than just their own top-line smartphones. We’d begun to wonder whether Samsung has gotten too big for their own good, but thankfully that doesn’t seem to be the case… yet.
We’re not sure how long Samsung will look to box out potential smart watch fans who aren’t necessarily fans of Samsung phones, but it wouldn’t seem like a wise long-term business decision. Samsung is also said to be working on bringing functionality for the current Galaxy Gear to more smartphones, though the South Korean company wasn’t ready to make any promises.
All told, it sounds like this thing was rushed just a bit too much, as not even Samsung seems sure of their exact plan of attack from here on out. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the little guy as it is slated to launch alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014 Edition later this month. Be sure to take a look at our early hands-on with the thing, and see how it fares up against other big-time smart watches that are either already seeding the market or set to do so sometime soon.

It was rushed… but why… oh yeah… because Apple had a product announcement on the horizon, and Samsung had to beat them to the punch. But… now they are realizing that they have introduced a flawed product and back peddling. I think they should consider canceling the current Galaxy Gear and go back to the drawing board.
I personally won’t ever buy a manufacturer specific smart watch. I would only consider a Pebble or other 3rd party that makes platform independent watches. Even a Google smartwatch will likely connect to an iPhone.

Well yea! They had to get their watch on the market before Apple. If they didn’t Apple would have starting suing everybody and their brother for copying their “innovation”.
yup it’s very important that Samsung has something out before Apple. Also, I don’t think Apple fans would care if an Apple watch didn’t work with non-Apples but suddenly it’s a big flaw if this only works with Samsungs?

I don’t get why in all of these comparison articles people are doing, the pebble gets left out of the conversation. Of all of the available smartwatches, it brings the most to the table. It’s waterproof, talks to android and ios, interchangeable straps, actually looks like a watch, has a fairly decent developer community, multi-day battery life…I don’t understand why it doesn’t have more backing in the techn-news media.
Is it perfect? No, about once a day I have to toggle my blue tooth on my phone because it will loose it’s connection, but it’s blue tooth, so it’s to be expected. It also is somewhat limited style-wise, it looks like a dork’s watch….but….only a dork would wear one anyway, so there’s that.

For me, this will not do. I’ll need something like a nexus smartwatch. This is too bulky. I will end up getting one in 2 years. When the work out all the kinks
Too bad the first one will be terrible and the sequel sure hell will be terrible as well. I see a discontinue in the future for this product.

has anyone that is bashing the galaxy gear ever tried one out… gone to the annoucement and handle one… NO? didn’t think so! it could be great it could be crap but it can’t be said until its released in the holiday season. I have the sony smartwatch and to me it is terrible. i lost sync with my phone almost hourly and it was small on my wrist. (i am 6’3 250lbs). Nobody said a thing about the galaxy gear when all the features were addressed but now its said to be a test run and the haters come out. i like it… i like what it has to offer. will i like it when i have it on my wrist. who knows? i liked the smartwatch also on paper but having it in real life i didn’t.
Yeah, my Sony watch hasn’t been charged in a few months. Never could get it to work right.
