It isn’t going to be just the Nexus 5 users who are going to benefit from Google’s emphasis on photography in their latest flagship device: as it turns out, the camera app, which is part of AOSP, comes with a photo editor which in my opinion is one of the most powerful ones ever.

While it offers a significant number of preset filters for the casual user, there are numerous options for those who want finer control, and also allows them to save their combination of effects as a preset that they can reuse on different images later on. The editor is also non-destructive (i.e., your originals are safe). Do check out the video below to get the complete picture.

  1. Very impressing.
Certainly too much for the basic user, but I guess many won’t need Snapseed anymore.

    1. good point! where does Snapseed fit into the mix? Has Google replicated all of that functionality into this photo editor?

      1. Not sure if all of Snapseed is in this but I am seeing A LOT of functionality that isn’t present in Snapseed here. (Or even their Nik software packages)

      2. The guys over at Nik, a Google company and also the developers of Snapseed, are the ones that made the app and shared the video. So my guess is that they fit into the mix quite well.

  2. Most of these photo controls are currently available on my Droid Mini. It’s integrated into the gallery and works very fast. I’ve found it eliminates the need for a third party app. Localized adjustment and separate color saturation controls are not currently available so that will be a nice addition.

  3. Wow! Soooo, someone pull the apk already!

    1. It’s Android 4.2+ :(

      1. Huh? I’m not sure I’m seeing what the problem is with what you’re saying?

        1. I think they’re trying to say the app only works on Android 4.2 or higher.

Which is weird. You’d think the app only works on 4.4 and higher.

          1. Oh, well I’m on 4.3 all around right now so no worries for me.

  4. Does anyone know a photo grid app that lets you place a grid (specifically the horizontal triple split) on top of a single image, instead of three individual images?

  5. Screw the photo editor. What Android really needs is a good goddamn video editor.

    1. I agree! And the same applies to Linux!

    2. Google’s Movie Studio has always worked great for me!

  6. Just got my shipment notification and can’t wait to try this and every other awesome feature of kitkat. Was afraid I’d be delayed, since I ordered at 11:56 PDT.

  7. Wish annotation was available…

  8. Wow that’s awesome. Can’t wait to try it.

  9. Awesome. Gonna play around with that as soon as my phone charges

  10. Too bad most manufacturers will remove this :-(

    1. I think you can get the camera app out the store, though.

  11. Tried it out on my Gnex, edited a pic i took a little while back and it came out pretty great, love the “curve feature” you can make some great manual HDR shots with it, use it all the time on Photoshop.

  12. I must’ve said wow at least 10 times in during the video. Amazing!
