New manufacturer OnePlus makes CyanogenMod phone — the OnePlus One — official
The dots are beginning to connect quite nicely and form quite a clear picture, folks. Remember Pete Lau’s OnePlus? The ex-Oppo VP made a bold move in his career, but we knew he wouldn’t do it if he didn’t believe he had the perfect partner to go forward with. That partner was rumored to be CyanogenMod, and now the pairing have made it official.
While we don’t learn any new details, we do get confirmation that the two will work in tandem to create a smartphone that will be designed to run CyanogenMod from the ground up. Says Pete Lau:
What’s coming is one of the most popular mobile operating systems specifically developed for the best hardware, with a unique twist. The smartphone industry is ripe for disruption, and 2014 should prove to be a huge year for the future of the market.
With that, they at least told us what they’d be planning on naming this new wonder. It’s the “OnePlus One,” which is oddly charming. Perhaps I’m reading a bit too much into it, but it sounds like the perfect name for these circumstances. The whole “1 + 1” equation is perfect symbolism for the marriage of these two players in this endeavor. Steve Kondik also had a few choice words of his own:
Upon hearing Pete’s vision for OnePlus, it was clear we had found the right partner. By combining our software expertise with Pete’s background in hardware and design, we’ll develop a phone that will exceed both of our expectations.
That’s all we have for now, but we’re told to expect the OnePlus One in the first half of 2014. For what it’s worth, the phone is rumored to be powered by a Snapdragon 800 processor, which should be plenty of kick for the CyanogenMod software that it’ll be running by default. We certainly can’t wait to see the fruits of this partnership at some point within the next few months.
