Ready for another specification drip for the OnePlus One smartphone? Previous releases have told us about the device’s processor and battery — Snapdragon 800 and 3,100mAh, respectively — and now we’re getting our first details about the display on this thing.
Pete Lau has announced that the OnePlus One will have a 5.5-inch 1080p HD display, and there’s some very interesting technology at work here.
For starters, Touch-on-Lens technology nearly makes the touch and display modules one cohesive unit, with the manufacturing process being responsible for eliminating the distance between the two components. This makes the display 300% more shatterproof than competing technologies, though we can’t speak to those claims for ourselves just yet.
The display also implements CABC (content-adaptive backlight control) and DRAM technology, which can detect when an image on the display is static or dynamic, and can adjust power draw accordingly. The display will, in turn, be able to use less power when there’s nothing going on than some 5-inch displays at similar levels of brightness.
And if all of that isn’t enough, OnePlus says they’ve been able to fit the 5.5-inch monster display into a chassis that’s smaller than some phones with 5-inch displays. They used the 5-inch Sony Xperia Z1 as an example, though there’s something to be said about that.
For starters, Sony is notorious for using insanely large bezels, so we can’t be too sure about the impressive nature of their claim. Secondly, we have to wonder why Pete Lau and company decided to cut the phone off in the frame of the photo — perhaps it’s longer than said Sony phone, but not wider.
It wouldn’t be the first time a company uses illusion and trickery to make staunch marketing claims, that’s for sure. Of course, OnePlus isn’t giving us any reason not to doubt them, as they have yet to show the phone itself.
We’ll have to wait until the phone is fully outed before seeing if this feat is as amazing as they’d have us believe. In any case, you can bet we’ll be waiting on the edge of our seats for the next big of info that sprouts about the first phone designed for CyanogenMod.

Specs are very late 2013 when it was bleeding edge and this project was starting what is going to be in the s5?
It’s not necessarily all about specs, the S800 is an amazing processor and if the user experience is top notch that’s all that matters. John Q Public isn’t going to be looking at the hard core specs like we do and compare them to other top phones. They are going to look at the looks, the user interface and features, and how the phone performs in day to day functions such as texts, calls, FB, and such.
More to the point is that it’s fairly common to band aid poor code with hardware. I think if the Moto X taught us anything, it’s that better code can really extend the capabilities of a device and being bleeding edge isn’t everything. With carrier subsidies going away (somewhat), people will want a device that lasts longer so they can go an extra year or so with a lower monthly bill once the phone is paid off.
Exactly, case in point is Touchwiz. Even with a S800 on the S4 it still lags a bit due to poor coding, HTC finally got it somewhat right with Sense 5+ and Moto has really set the bar for great performance on “midrange” specs.
The Moto X has something to say about that.

I really like what they’re doing when it comes to releasing product information. Instead of leaks and speculation, they’re letting us know what’s going to be used in their upcoming smartphone and the decisions on why they went that particular route. It’s a very personal experience.
Additionally, these timed, scheduled informational updates are also good for them as they’re a brand new, basically no name company. This keeps their names in the media and keeps us thinking about them.
I cannot wait to try this phone. Their marketing is working.

How about giving us a release date?
I need a new one in the next month or two, if this is really great I might wait. If all we have is BS and speculation, then I will get a MotoX or N5.

considering how they want to price this close to a Nexus 5 and the top tier internals.. I would not be surprised if they utilize plastic..maybe a polycarbonate plastic like the old HTC OneX….but no definite answer….
Yeah… I’m gonna have to ask you to not bring that up again. And if you could refrain from starting a useless debate about building a device from plastic vs metal that’d be great.
the fact that they cut the pic doesn’t mean anything. there’s enough real estate on the Z1 to easily fit a 5.5″ screen on that phone. it’ll just mean a lot less bezel.
This phone sounds godly but my real question is how much? I mean the choice of having physical and software keys, almost top of the line specs, all this new screen tech in a neat package and unlocked out of the box. My wallet looking at me like….
They said under $400
Well, if my math is correct the screen would only be about 4.7″ long, which is well withing the Z1’s 5.69″ length. However, they’re might have been some “ugly” modifications to fit the screen and have the display still work.
You can see the phone popping out a bit if you zoom in. Looks to be whitish grey. So we know it will come out in white. Hoping their is a black too.
