Secret, which has been an iOS exclusive for the past 4 months, is now available for Android. Secret allows you to “speak freely” by sharing your thoughts with friends while being anonymous. The idea behind Secret came about so that people could share moments, like posts, and reshare other’s posts without the need to be embarrassed, raise controversy, and most importantly: to just be themselves without filter.
With the launch of Secret on Google Play, Android users will have exclusive access to features that iOS users have been asking for since the beginning: two separate streams. First, a “Friend” stream and second, an “Explore” stream, where you can browse and share popular secrets from around the world. In addition to Android exclusive features, Secret’s update today brings about ways to make posts more engaging by including questions you can ask and respond to and view how many of your friends are using Secret.
Secret is all about sharing secretly. When you post on Secret, at first only your contacts with the app installed will see your anonymous post. Then, if your contacts heart or like your post, their contacts can now see the post. Then, those people can heart the post and their contacts will see it, etc. As you can see, your posts have a chance to go viral, spreading around from person to person, helping add more anonymity as additional people see and heart the secret.
As for security and privacy, contacts are hashed, so no raw phone numbers or personally identifiable information is sent to Secret to match friends to other friends. The metadata for each secret posted is also stored without referencing any a user. For a full breakdown of Secret’s privacy and security practices, head on over to their official blog post, which explains everything in great detail.
To start posting your inner most thoughts, head on over to the Google Play Store to install Secret. You’ll need a device rockin’ Android 4.1 and higher.
Here’s a link to the Play Store. It wasn’t easy to find.

Which is mentioned on the very last line of the article…
Oh. Well it was not well placed below those images and right above a text ad. It looked like ad text.
Yeah, not your fault @derekross:disqus , I think the ads, etc are kind of taking over. Between the picture ads, the text ad, and the “Further Reading”, and the pics in the article, your link is completely lost. :-(
I honestly think “Further Reading” should be some kind of pop-out bar on the side (maybe with a count of how many articles), that way, it’s less intrusive. (but with a click, easily accessible) With the current layout, I gotta say, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and is very irritating. I <3 you guys, but you might want to consider a slight redesign. :-
(I understand you guys need the ads to make a living, just might want to consider how it looks all mashed together)
An app for more people to express their racist rants on the down low.
My first thought too. This could go bad quite quickly. I’m tempted to download and try it, as I love demoing apps. But I should talk myself out of it so I don’t stumble racist/hateful/demeaning posts and rage.
(…Yeah I know. That’s already all over the internet.)
@robblaich:disqus @disqus_7zCKYC2BSD:disqus Honestly, I thought the same thing too but I have yet to come across a single racist post. So far, it’s been insightful and it’s kinda cool to see people reveal things about themselves that they otherwise wouldn’t. Let’s you know you aren’t the only weirdo in the world.
It’s like a message in a bottle.
It’s coming the ignorant are everywhere!!
They’ve been everywhere since the dawn of life in the universe.
So true!
Oh boy, an app to allow people to turn the Internet into an even bigger cesspool, by cowardly hiding behind anonymity. I don’t need an app to tell a friend what I really think. This will further exacerbate the problem of kids not being able to communicate in real life. Let me just hide behind this app while I tell you how I really feel. I must have drank my haterade this morning. :D
Nah, I find it 100% more honest. People are genuine because they’re anonymous. It’s a lot different from other parts of the internet where people like to puff themselves up or look cool. It’s a great app.
Okay, I think I get what you are saying here. It’s honest conversation rather than a cesspool of insults. That is pretty cool. Most people have a tough time with honesty. I still personally think it’s a little lame. Honestly, no offense intended… I just think that if you think it’s worth saying, then own it and say it. You shouldn’t need to hide behind a cloak to voice a valid opinion. What reason is there to hide if you have something honest and valid to say? The only reason that I can think of to hide, is fearing what others think; and if someone isn’t willing to stand behind what they say, I question the validity/merit of their opinion.
Like 4chan?
Haterade. That was a Powerthirst parody.
Should have called it pointless instead
How did you make the home button change in the launcher? That’s awesome
I once killed a man just to watch him die.- phandroid writer.
I once banned a man because he deserved it.
Went on there, saw a few posts, pretty uninteresting. Maybe at night or the weekend all the juicy secrets come out but I’m dropping the app.
It’s SO good. Maybe cuz I follow a lot of tech journalists on Twitter so my circle is perfect for this platform.
Also, it’s incredibly therapeutic to vent and reveal stuff that you might not be able to without the mask of anonymity.
