One of the many things Google talked about yesterday was Android Wear. They gave us a demo of the software, and announced two smartwatches that can be purchased right now. One thing that they didn’t talk a lot about is what devices are compatible with Android Wear. Luckily there is a very simple way to check if your phone will work with a Wear device.
- Go to g.co/WearCheck on your Android device
- Read the results.
The site will detect your phone and let you know if it’s compatible. If you get the nice big green check marks, like on the Nexus 5 above, you are good to go. Here’s a little cheat if you don’t feel like checking a website: Android Wear only works with devices running Android 4.3 or higher. Most newer devices will be fine, but if your phone is a little on the older end it may not. iPhones are also not compatible.

I’m usually one of the nitwits that pounces on new technology without question, but I don’t understand the hype around this. What is the allure? It just seems like a device that reminds me to check my other device even more than I already do. What am I missing?

The point of android wear is to NOT have to be checking your phone every minute. Let’s say you get a text. The point of AW isn’t just to let you know you got a text, it’s to also give you the opportunity to reply without having to ever take your phone out of your pocket. If you are constantly having to check your phone for notifications; this will benefit you. If you aren’t that person then this probably isn’t worth the money.

It’s obviously not needed, and the people it probably appeals to most are those who don’t mind using voice commands. It’s your information at a quick glance and makes it more accessible.
Do you pull your phone out of your pocket frequently?
Do you lay your phone on your lap while driving or have it mounted in the car?
Do you find yourself lacking space at the dinner table or your office desk because you leave your phone out all the time for quick access?
Do you wear skinny jeans and leave your phone in your fashionable bag all the time and can’t reach it?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, android wear might be for you. =P.
Thanks for the explanation. I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade. If people are excited about it, great for them and for Android. And knowing me, something will click and I’ll find myself driving to the store to buy a smart watch next week.
There is definite interest in my side, but not so much where I have to run out and buy one. I can see how it would help but as it stands right now I’ll wait until the reviews come in since prior smartwatch reviews haven’t been stellar.
for me it will also be the moolah. I burned out my tax refund faster than i expected and now may have to wait until christmas. :(

look at my verizon galaxy nexus hanging in there with the big dogs! thanks to PA Android of course, verizon wont be upgrading any of these past gingerbread i believe it is right? oh well Rooted, ROM’ed, and rebooted. thats why i choose a Nexus right! is that a POF notification? oops
My Nexus 5 is a go. Let me power up my Samsung Captivate and check that one.
Kind of obvious maybe, but note that you have to use the default browser or it may not work. In my case (Nexus 5), visiting the page with Firefox gave me a negative result.
