In this week’s edition of From the Forums, we learn to trust our local wireless retailer, how to reset a seemingly broken smartphone, and why being left-handed has more perks than you might think. Be sure to head on over to Android Forums for even more discussions like the ones below. Let’s get started, shall we?
What’s the first thought that crosses your mind if you bring home your brand new smartphone only to find a mysterious outgoing call was placed using it, presumably by the sales associate at your local wireless retailer? Is something fishy going on? Could that pristine phone already be marked for malware? Before freaking out, you might like to know that this is a fairly common occurrence. A clerk placing a call is a perfectly normal step in the testing and configuration process before sending home a customer with their new toy. But don’t take our word for it — we’ve got Android Forums for that.
Your phone’s screen is dead and the device rendered completely useless to you, but that doesn’t mean that personal data entombed within it is necessarily safe. Before tossing the old, malfunctioning phone it is wise to perform a system wipe. The trick, of course, is that there is no way of accessing the handset’s system settings without a functional display. Pro tip: use Android Device Manager, accessed via Google Play on a PC or other device, to easily restore the phone to factory status.
Here is an interesting question: would you still buy the same phone given your experiences with it thus far? If not, what would you get instead? One user in the market for a new device posed the inquiry to current Galaxy Note 3 owners. For those wondering, the thread started over a month ago and it seems the OP still hasn’t made a decision. Opinions still welcomed.
For the majority of the world, yesterday passed with little pomp and circumstance. For those special few born with a penchant for employing their left hand as dominant, it was cause for celebration. August 13th is International Left-Handers Day, and the lefties over at Android Forums took a few moments to bask in their sinistral glory. Fun fact: left-handers make up only about 10 percent of the world’s population.
