Hold onto your hats folks — looks like LG prompted Samsung to issue their smart watch announcement a bit early. The company today confirmed the existence of a new smart watch that might hold a tremendous amount of value for those who don’t fancy tethering to a smartphone for their smart watch needs.
What you see above is what we’ve been calling the “Gear Solo,” and comes with its own embedded 3G radios so you can make calls and use data without having to tether it to a smartphone. Beyond that, it actually sounds like a pretty powerful smart watch under the hood. Here are the specs you can look forward to:
- 2-inch Super AMOLED display at 480 x 360
- dual-core 1GHz processor
- 512MB of RAM
- 4GB of storage
- WiFi N, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS w/GLONASS
- 300mAh battery
Samsung says you can get up to 2 days of “typical” usage out of this thing, though we’re sure that will eventually vary from person to person. As for software you can expect Tizen to be running on this bad boy (which we know isn’t the most popular thing Samsung could have used).
The design looks pretty sleek, but you’re out of luck if you want to customize the wrist band.
Following that announcement is the Gear Circle, an accessory that’ll let you listen to tunes, make phone calls and issue voice commands on either your phone or smart watch. We thought the Gear Circle would turn out to be a smart watch with a circular display, but it looks like Samsung had something totally different in mind. Where does it get its name? The fact that it can wrap around your neck and clasp into a magnetic mechanism, effectively making a “circle.” You can also call it the geekiest necklace you’ll ever wear.
Samsung expects their latest products to be available this October, and we imagine they’ll push them quite heavily alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 expected to be unveiled in one short week. No pricing details have been mentioned at this point, though we’re sure Samsung will be throwing us the details once they are finalized.
would Dali approve?
I don’t need to make phone calls from my smart watch with carrier data. I just want it to tell the time, have alarms, show me some notifications, take audio notes, and flip a few switches on the phone. Not even as complicated as the MOTOACTV watch.
That is true. But other people will and this is great if your on a business trip and can have it as a backup if your phone gets lost.
I’d think it would be a bit faster to make a call from your watch. Especially for ladies who would have to dig out their Note 3 from their purse.
The gear circle is more appealing than the watch!…. LOL
With Android Wear?
The article answers that question.
2 days with the addition of antennas so you can put a sim in it, I’LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE IT!
Without Android it still loses to the Omate TrueSmart. As much as the company sucks, it’s still the stand alone android smart watch to beat.
Bulky, unattractive, incompatible with all the apps that will be coming out for the Android watches… This thing is DOA.
Ahh. . .I have no desire for a smartwatch at all. No problem getting the time, date, and notifications straight from my Galaxy S4.
That’s great. Then don’t buy one. I myself would love to just glance at my wrist instead of pull out my phone. but hey, that’s just me.
I bet there will be even more watches by cheustmas.. The samesung way
Samsung Gear S and LG G Watch R are quite closely matched when it comes to specs, but Gear S looks so much better!

This would be mine if it wasn’t for Tizen.
I think they had to use tizen because android wear is still not made for a phone radio.
Aaaaaaaaah, Samsung so stupid, they finally release something I want, and I can’t even pair it to my droid
Why don’t they just call it the galaxy micro curve? The design of this is just boring and uninspiring. How hard is it to design something attractive? Moto did with the 360 and lg figured it out with the R, come on samsung.
So pretty much the only watch shape you think is attractive is round?
I personally prefer a round design yes but that doesn’t mean a square/rectangle design can’t be just as attractive. This device just looks like your typical galaxy of the month just shrunken down to fit on your wrist.
I actually love the curved display. Just don’t care much for Tizen.
because a circle watch that looks like a circle watch is sooooo inspiring ::slow clap::
Love the design on that Gear S though. Doesn’t have to be “Inspirational” too look sleek and cool.
Looks good, but not into Tizen.
Tizen no thanks Samsung not gonna buy any product from sammy
This is actually pretty interesting. If you could also make it a hotspot and run on LTE then it might be actually something I’d want, though it’s probably burn through it’s battery in 5 minutes as a hotspot….but who knows maybe in the next year or two that might be possible. Then the watch becomes your daily driver and you could just carry a tablet when you want a bigger screen.
Looks like a Photoshopped Gear Fit.
Phandroid,FYI the images warp badly when resizing the chrome window. Not sure why.
