Protip: Charge your Moto 360 using a portable charger when away from an outlet

After our post yesterday discussing the Motorola Moto 360’s battery life in great depth, by now you should know the smartwatch’s longevity shouldn’t be a huge concern (unless you plan on being away from a charger for 20+ hours).

But no matter how many hours you get on the smartwatch, there will be a time when you’ll have to charge the thing up. Thankfully, this isn’t a huge chore, as the Moto 360 and its tiny 320mAh battery can easily hit a full charge with little down time. While that’s all good and dandy, what if you forgot to charge the 360 in its dock overnight and have to rush out to make a plane trip?

For those times when you are away from an outlet, we just wanted to remind you that the 360’s wireless charger can be paired with any old standard portable charger for charging on-the-go. We experimented with the official Motorola Power Pack Micro and sure enough, our Moto 360 charged up just fine. Of course, any old standard portable charger will work just fine, although tiny USB cables might not look at streamlined as the Moto charger picture above but it should still get the job done.

If the odd shape of the official Motorola Moto 360 wireless charger is still too much for you to carry in your pocket (or perhaps you just want to leave it at home), there are several portable wireless charging options available on Amazon, like the Qi-infinity (4,000mAh) for only $35. Simply strap your 360 to that and you should be good to go. We’re all about solutions here at Phandroid.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. Sad reality of this device.

    1. Hey, don’t buy it!

      1. Too late. I sold mine the other day. 10 to 12 hours w/o ambient isn’t good enough for me.

        1. Do you sleep with your watch?

          1. It was on the bedside charging. However, no I do not sleep with it on. Took off the charger at 7am and it was dead by 7pm with occassional use.

          2. Did you have everything syncing to it? Yesterday was my first day with it and I took it off the charger at 5:45 am and it was at 18% when I went to bed at 10 pm. Though, I only have Sms, Hangouts, play music and a few other things showing notifications. Ambient mode off and auto brightness on

          3. I didn’t customize notifications at all. I don’t get a lot, but some. I personally think that the screen on detection isn’t that great. I often times would look down to see the screen on while doing random things. Of course the screen would often refuse to come on when I actually wanted it to…sigh.

          4. I have the same problems when I’m sitting on the couch for some reason. I definitely understand why some wouldn’t be okay with it. I took mine off the charger at 7am today and it’s a bit after 9 and it’s at 20%. I mostly slept all day but I slept on my right hand side with the watch on my left wrist so I think I was waking it a decent amount when I was asleep. (getting over these seasonal allergies)

Yesterday I used it a bit more and had better battery life /shrug

  2. 2nd day with the Moto 360. Unplugged at 7am, it’s 2:17pm and I’m at 40%. What is up with this?

    1. So maybe 14 hours of battery life when all is said and done. Keep charging it. For some reason it gets better for some. I was barely hitting 14 hours before the latest firmware update but now I’m always 22+ hours.

  3. Protip: Wait for the LG G Watch R. It’s better in almost every way – much bigger battery, better screen (OLED and full circle), much better low power consumption SoC, and more premium looking (compare to Rolex, Tag Heuer, Breitling, etc.).

    1. Don’t compare any of these smart watches to a luxury timepiece, please. I don’t even trust Apple and their ‘sapphire crystal’ enough as it is. Wear will probably replace my every day timepiece, but I know it’s only an expensive phone add-on.

Up until I can wear a smart watch worry free, scuba diving, and in extreme environments, it’s on a different caliber.

    2. In your opinion. However, here’s my Protip: I think the LG G Watch R is NOT better in many ways – bad proprietary charger, not as attractive, smaller screen (who cares about a “full circle” that is less screen real estate than a “non full circle,” bulkier, no ambient light sensor, decorative non functional bezel wrapped around the entire screen to hide the insides, no word on customizable watch faces…these are all things that come immediately to mind. So it’s kind of silly to say the G Watch R is better in almost every way, as different people have different tastes, wants, and needs. An obvious fact considering you think The G Watch R compares to a Rolex. LOL.

  4. My gear 2 is at 8% at 5:45. Starting using it around 9 at around 25% and used it alot.

    1. Wow. Such battery. Very clock.

  5. This is all good and everything but it just seems so broken that this type of tip is even necessary.

    1. It’s not “necessary,” more like an emergency in case you forget to charge one night and have to rush out the house the next morning.

    2. I think it’s great. Like EVERYONE I know doesn’t either travel with chargers or are constantly asking to borrow one.

  6. Absolutely love my 360..I don’t care if I’m gushing!

Ninja edit: getting 20+ HR average with moderate use and showing it to people. I’m sure as the newness wears off it will be even better.

    1. Can’t wait to gush like you. Mine comes next Wednesday!

  7. I didn’t realize this. Thanks! I’m even more stoked to get my 360 next week (and I can’t wait to order that Micro charger, now too!)

  8. Here’s a better idea why not take the charger to work with you so you can plug in.

  9. Why can’t you plug the battery into the watch? Is that stand required?
Is this thing wireless charging only?

    1. yes

      1. ouch ok
        thanks
