It’s been a little over a week since Mortal Kombat X was released for nex-gen consoles (and a few weeks since the iOS version became available). Today, the over-the-top gore fest finally lands on the Google Play Store for Android devices, courtesy of NetherRealm Studios and of course, is only suitable for ages 17 and up.

Mortal Kombat X 1

Gameplay is a bit different than that console versions, but anyone who’s played other “free-to-play” brawlers like Marvel Contest of Champions or previous Injustice will know what to expect. The actual fighting in the game involves mashing the screen to attack, with gestures cues and other quick time events popping up onscreen to execute some of the moves. It’s pretty basic and can get repetitive at times, but then again it’s the level grinding that really looks to suck players in.

Mortal Kombat X level up

The actual characters you use in battle are based on cards that can be leveled up the more you play, with successful matches netting you “Koins” (gold and silver) and “Souls.” Those are the currency in the game (freemium games tend to have at least 3 types of currency to keep things interesting) with the latter being the hardest to earn. Alliance points are earned with support cards, Koins are used to buy silver card packs for new characters or power up special moves, and Souls are the highest form of currency, used to gain access to gold characters.

Mortal Kombat X character cards

All the violence you love from Mortal Kombat is here, with the series’ X-Rays and Fatalities making the successful transition to mobile. You can play online against other players in Faction Wars, or summon other players’ character cards for use in battle. Whatever your expectations of this game are, expect to spend plenty of time unlocking anything worthwhile.

If you look at reviews on the Google Play Store, you’ll find the game not running the best on older handsets. If your phone has 1GB of RAM or less, you’re probably going to want to stay away. The install takes up a whopping 1.5 GB of free space, so keep that in mind before downloading to your 8GB handset. The game is only available in select countries right now, but if you’d like to take a stab at it, Google Play link provided below.

I've been obsessed with consumer technology for about as long as I can remember, be it video games, photography, or mobile devices. If you can plug it in, I have to own it. Preparing for the day when Android finally becomes self-aware and I get to welcome our new robot overlords.

  1. Kinda wish they would add non button-mash controls

    1. I think there’s a market for it no doubt. Maybe a freemium version with “casual” gameplay like this, and a paid $10 version with actual gamepad/fighting controls.

      1. I don’t think you’re gonna get one of those for $10, when the console versions are going for $60. $30 maybe.

        1. It’s completely possible, when that is exactly the of price of many mobile games, and around the price Square charges for its ports.

Remember, this isn’t a port, but rather a “companion app” to the main game.

  2. Showing unavailable in the U.S…..

    1. This is an epic fail. The country where this franchise has been made. SMDH

  3. I was happy until I seen the not available in your country bs.

  4. I will cop this when available meanwhile enjoying my MK10 on PS4..they should have a “unlock all” option on mobile..anyways , PSN: cali4niaguy….

  5. Pocket Gamer gave this a poor review, citing that it will cost you about 50 dollars to get most of the basic characters, while over 300 dollars to get all of the special characters. They noted that, in order to perform fatalities, the main characters are needed, which may be surprising to some when they discover that the vanilla/FTP version features generic fighters that have some of the main characters’ moves (but not all of them). The gameplay was said to be almost non-existent, too, with an emphasis on collecting/buying characters.

  6. Showing available in Germany, but not compatible with Nexus 5 and Nexus 9.
WTF?! What devices did they develop that for?

    1. Most all devices kit Kat and above… It’s just says not compatible because it’s not officially released to us until later today … Yesterday was a small test to see how things would go…

  7. Is there a list of these “select countries”?

    1. The Philippines is one I know for sure.

  8. Not in US…. Wow

  9. I’m actualling killing Marvel Contest of Champions currently… easily get a lot of burn with that game on Nexus 6. If this anything like that then it would probably be decent. But I’m good with ‘Champions’ for now.

    1. The Age of Ultron update made it really fun again I think too.

  10. Hi my country is india, however I have managed to download this game from another source and now I’m getting black and white textures while playing it, if some one have resolved this issue then please help me up, I will recall appreciate your efforts.

    1. it’s not your GPU version then

  11. S5 not supported? What is it only available in 2 countries on 2 phones?

    1. even my Nexus 4, 7 and huawei ascend G750 not supported now ……i wrote email to support want to play it ….now i play injustice with Scorpion :D

      1. It is supported they just have everything blocked until it gets released to everyone later today… Yesterday was a small test is all…

        1. thank you …good to know :)

It said so here. . And they are normally correct… Maybe its tonight. I have Been checking every Hour lol

  12. 2 year old NFS Most Wanted takes 2Gb. 1.5Gb is not really whopping, unless you compare it with Flappy Birds.

  13. “Not compatible with any of your devices” I have 5 android devices, WT actual F.

edit: just read further down the comments to find that its blocked until this afternoon…

  14. I hope they gonna make this delay up ro us being that some of the in-game content unlocks from the mobile app. If video game companies are going to keep doing this then thwy need to make sure the app is ready to go when game is released

    1. That ain’t no kidding. On the verge of trading Mk in already and still no android app available.

  15. What an absolute, 100% shitshow of a release. WTF.

Looks like it’s FINALLY available in the US (5 days later), at least I get the option to Install now from the web Play Store. However, it’s saying it’s incompatible with ALL of my devices. This includes: OnePlus One, Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 (2013), Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1, Shield Portable, and Nexus Player.

Also read about users with S4/5/6’s who also can’t install. So what did they do, make it compatible with the most unpopular devices, rather than focus on the most popular ones? Brilliant.

What bullshit. No idea what they were thinking.

  16. Why don’t they have it for USA ?

  17. So has a release date for the US been posted yet?
