While 2K displays on smaller devices like the Samsung Galaxy S6 could be seen as a bit of overkill, we have to admit, it looks pretty great on bigger devices like the Nexus 6. While we were just starting to warm up to 2K, it appears some OEMs like Sony already have 4K in their sights.
Uncovered by the folks at XperiaBlog, a recent user agent profile (UAProf) is showing a new Xperia device — E6833/E6853/E6883 — in the works with an eye blistering 4K display. It’s thought this could be the Sony Xperia Z5 Pllus, a larger phablet sized version of the Sony Xperia Z5 launching later this year. Like the recently leaked Sony Xperia Z5 and Sony Xperia Z5 Compact, the UAProf is also showing the Z5+ as packing a Snapdragon 810.
The one thing it’s not revealing is the actual display size. If 5.5-inches (no confirmation of this, mind you), it could carry an insanely high 801ppi. We’ll need to double check, but pretty sure that’s higher than real life. If nothing else, a new Sony smartphone with a 4K display could show that Sony is really trying to take mobile seriously, even if it’s little more than bragging rights. Now, 4K on a 10-inch+ tablet, now that would make a lot more sense. Sony has an IFA event scheduled for September 2nd. Maybe we’ll learn more then.
