Sony isn’t planning to announce their Xperia Z5 family of devices — that would be the Sony Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact and Xperia Z5 Premium — until their big IFA conference in Berlin later this week, but the leaks have been fast and plentiful. Another big spill has occurred today, with French media accidentally publishing their advance coverage on the smartphones’ launches ahead of announcement.
While the original video was taken down, some crafty folks were able to retain it and upload it to Dailymotion. The video shows a fairly familiar device in terms of design. It’s a language Sony has clung to for years now, and it looks just as good now as it always has.
The devices should sport a fair bit of metal, which will have an Xperia logo etched into the side, according to the video. The video also apparently confirms the use of a 23 megapixel camera with an industry-best autofocus rate of 30 milliseconds. That’s not going to appear much faster than the 250 milliseconds some previous models sported, but faster is faster.
We also learn that all three models will be water and dust resistant, something Sony has prided themselves on in recent times. That’s sure to be good news for those who were turned away by Samsung’s negligence to include it in the latest Galaxy phones.
Previous details mentioned about the models were corroborated, including the use of fingerprint scanners in all three devices. The sensors are side-mounted instead of the typical rear or front-facing placement found on other devices. It remains to be seen if that’ll make for an awkward user experience.
Furthermore, we have a bit more confirmation on each of the three devices’ exact display sizes and resolutions:
- Sony Xperia Z5: 5.2-inch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution
- Sony Xperia Z5 Compact: 4.6–inch display with 1280 x 720 resolution
- Sony Xperia Z5 Premium: 5.5–inch display with 2560 x 1440 resolution
Other known specs include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage and an 8MP front-facing camera. We only have 2 short days before Sony takes to the stage in Berlin so be sure to swing back for the full official details once they go live.
