Something strange occurred over the weekend over at the Google Store. References to a “Nexus Protect” have popped up in source code, with the name appearing in the following string of text:
You can’t add this phone unless it has the same Nexus Protect choice as other phones in your cart. You can update your choice or purchase this phone in your next order.
That alone doesn’t give us a clue as to what it is, though one might suggest this is a protection plan or extended warranty for Nexus devices bought through the Google Store. The name sounds an awful lot like the Nest Protect, but we imagine Google isn’t going to offer a Smoke + CO detector with a different name when the company they own already makes one (the second generation of which just launched).
An extended warranty is something Google hasn’t yet provided in the Google Store so this is something that could help earn more business instead of losing customers to warranty providers such as Best Buy. Google and their partners already have a pretty good policy for defective devices, but there’s not much in the way of help for accidental damage or devices out of standard warranty, so this should be a welcome option for many.
We imagine the new warranty will launch alongside the new Nexus devices that are rumored to be shown off at a September 29th event, so we’ll be looking for details on that once Google makes it all official.
