Sony Xperia Z5 Premium only switches to 4K in certain situations

Sony’s 4K display on the Xperia Z5 Premium sounded insane at first. It’ll look amazing, sure, but how could the Snapdragon 810 keep up with the need to constantly push that many pixels to a display at once when it can barely do so on the 1080p HTC One M9 without breaking a sweat? And what about that battery life?

Well, now we know what the deal is: 4K mode is only enabled when viewing photos and video, but that’s it. You won’t get a constant stream of 4K goodness playing games or with general use of the OS.

But you really didn’t need it in those situations. And it’s probably still way overkill for photos and video. Sony says the device will mostly run at 1080p, which is still quite sharp for general use:

Xperia Z5 Premium features a 4K display with a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels based on SID Standard and enables all video and image content to be enjoyed in 4K resolution. All other content is displayed at 1080P or lower resolution in order to optimise the performance and battery stamina for this device, ensuring you can enjoy the 4K resolution when you need it most.

This shouldn’t be a huge dealbreaker for most people, but if your sole reason for wanting the Xperia Z5 Premium was to have Android in 4K goodness, you might want to consider this new revelation when making your purchase decision.
