The FedEx guy just dropped off this wonderful package on our doorstep and to our surprise, it was the Moto 360 we custom built on Periscope the other day. We didn’t just opt for the all-black black model like we did with the last one, instead choosing black leather straps with a silver case, and black bezel. Because there’s a whole lot new here, we decided an unboxing and initial first impressions was the way to go. Check it out in the video above.
At $50 to $100 more than last year’s model, it’s clear some of that money went into the packaging. It’s not the typical all-cardboard box with the watch hidden inside. This time around, Motorola went with a plastic shell that showcases the watch to the world. Much more eye catching when sitting on store shelves. Inside you’ll find a new slightly modified wireless charger (Motorola says the watch isn’t compatible with the old charger, but it could still work fine if not inconsistently).
There’s a charger also inside the box, but it’s permanently attached to the micro USB cable (like we saw with the Moto X Pure Edition). The charger only outputs 550ma, so we’re wondering if using something with 1A might charger the device a little quicker.
Giving the watch the once over, it certainly looks much more premium than last year’s Moto 360. The metal is more solid and there’s a nice weight to it. Yes, the flat tire is still there (it’s the black bar where the ambient light sensor rests), but it wasn’t anywhere near as bothersome as the outgoing model’s. If you’re choosing a black watch face, you’ll hardly even notice it’s there. It’s tough for us to say for certain, but it appears our display could be a little crooked. Of course, that could just be our OCD talking.
Arguably the best part about the new Moto 360 2nd Gen are the watch straps which now feature a tiny unlocking slider. This means you can opt for multiple bands and swap them out on the fly according to your wardrobe that day. It’s a huge draw and something that has me looking to buy additional straps. Speaking of the straps, the quality of the leather is much improved than the previous model. They’re thicker, tougher, and an all around smoother and nicer leather. These look like they’ll hold up very well over time.
