Don’t look now OnePlus 2 owners, but the $250 OnePlus Mini / OnePlus X could have an NFC chip
It was only a few days ago we’d heard the OnePlus X — or OnePlus Mini — would have a 5-inch display and be running last year’s Snapdragon 801. That sounded promising for a device that’s supposed to come in at $250, but what about the rest of the specs?
A new rumor has cast a bit more light on things. G for Games is hearing that this is how the spec sheet will read out once OnePlus announces their latest smartphone:
- 5-inch 1920 x 1080 display, 2.5D + Gorilla Glass 3 or 4
- MediaTek Helio X10 SoC
- 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, microSD slot
- 13MP Sony IMX258 rear camera with 4K video recording (no mention of the dual sensors spotted in leaks), 5MP front camera with 1080p video recording
- 3,000mAh removable battery w/ Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0
- USB Type-C connector
- Rear-facing fingerprint scanner, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1, FM Radio and IR Blaster
You’ll notice the processor is different from what was originally reported. GforG suggests the Helio X10 chipset spotted inside the unit their source handled could potentially be a test or early prototype (which is said to be as old as 2 months, so a lot could have changed behind the scenes). Or perhaps it’s the Snapdragon 801-based model that was the test prototype? No one actually knows, but it sounds like it’ll have plenty of power for a $250 smartphone either way.
Many OnePlus 2 owners are bound to take issue with one other note on that spec sheet: the presence of an NFC chip. It was a major point of debate when the OnePlus 2 was announced, and that feature alone turned a lot of people away from the thought of buying it.
To see the feature on what should be a “lesser” smartphone that costs nearly $100 less has to be a major kick in the teeth, and we’re shocked OnePlus would consider it at all. Perhaps they don’t want to be blasted for excluding it? Who knows, but to have the now-standard feature on a more affordable model while those with the supposed “2016 flagship killer” have to do without would be pretty irritating to say the least, and we’d say this is a pretty bad way to apologize for the shortcomings of the OnePlus 2.
But, of course, these are only rumors, so we’ll have to wait for OnePlus to spill the official details before we figure out how we feel about it. Hopefully it won’t take long for those details to come to light as OnePlus reportedly aiming for an October reveal.
